Chapter 327
XENOIS

I stared at my phone for a long moment before dialing Thorne’s number. My hands were steadier than they had any right to be,
considering we might have one of the most dangerous supernatural creatures known stalking my family through Silver Creek. The phone
rang twice before Thorne picked up.
“Miss me already?” he answered, and I could hear the smile in his voice. “I’ve only been gone a few hours.”
“I need you to research nightwalkers,” I said without preamble. “Everything you can find. Weaknesses, tracking methods, kill
strategies. All of it.”
The levity drained from Thorne’s voice immediately. “Nightwalkers? Xenois, what the hell is going on?”
“Lumina was followed in town today,” I said, keeping my voice low even though the boys were in the other room. “She saw shadows,
movement, something that disappeared in smoke. Lake identified it as a nightwalker.”
Thorne swore colorfully. “If there’s a nightwalker in Silver Creek, you’ve got bigger problems than I thought. Those things are nearly
impossible to kill.”
“I know,” I said tightly. “Lumina fought one during the invasion at Zade’s territory. In the hospital. She only managed to kill it
because Lyn used his gravity manipulation to pin it down long enough for her to strike.”
“So you need the creature restrained before you can even attempt to hurt it,” Thorne said, and I could hear him already moving,
probably toward his office where he kept his research materials. “That’s going to be a problem if you’re trying to protect the boys. You
can’t exactly ask a five-year-old to hold still while a shadow monster attacks.”
“Don’t remind me,” I muttered, rubbing my temples where a headache was forming. “What do you know about them?”
“Not much,” Thorne admitted.
“They’re rare. Most werewolves never encounter one in their lifetime. They can manipulate shadows, travel through darkness, become
essentially invisible in their human form. In their animal form, they’re supposedly invincible-nothing can harm them while they’re pure
shadow.”
“Nothing?” I asked, hearing the desperation in my own voice.
“Nothing conventional,” Thorne clarified. “Magic might work, but you’d need a werewitch or someone with significant supernatural
abilities. And even then, you’d have to see it first to target it.”
I closed my eyes, fighting back the wave of helplessness threatening to overwhelm me. How was I supposed to protect my family
against an enemy I couldn’t see, couldn’t track, couldn’t kill? What kind of alpha was I if I couldn’t even keep my own children safe?

Chapter 327
“There has to be something,” I said.
“Some weakness, some method. These things aren’t immortal gods. They can be killed. Lumina did it once.”

“With help from a powerful werewitch who could manipulate gravity,” Thorne pointed out. “Do you have access to someone like that?”
I didn’t. Lyn was hours away in Zade’s territory, and even if I called him, even if he agreed to come help, that would take time we
might not have. Time the nightwalker could use to strike, to take Riley or Lake or any of my children.
“I’ll find something,” I said with more confidence than I felt. “Just do the research. Call me if you find anything useful.”
“I will,” Thorne promised. “And Xenois? Be careful. If there’s a nightwalker hunting in your territory, it means someone sent it.
Someone who wants something badly enough to risk open war with your pack.”
“I know,” I said quietly. “That’s what scares me most.”
We ended the call, and I sat in my office for a long moment, staring at the phone like it might spontaneously provide answers. It
didn’t, of course. Life was never that convenient.
Lumina appeared in the doorway, her expression tight with worry.
“Anything?”
“Not yet,” I admitted. “Thorne’s going to research, but he doesn’t know much more than we do. Nightwalkers are rare, and information
on how to kill them is even rarer.”
“We need to figure this out fast,” Lumina said, coming to sit in the chair across from my desk. “If they’re watching us, if they know
where we live, where the boys go to school… Xenois, we’re sitting ducks.”
“I know,” I said, frustration bleeding into my voice. “But I don’t know how to fight an enemy I can’t see. How am I supposed to protect
them when the threat could be standing right next to us and we’d never know?”
Lumina was quiet for a moment, her fingers drumming against the armrest in that nervous pattern she did when she was thinking hard about something. “Lake said Andy used nightwalkers as scouts and spies. That means he has information about them. About how
they work, what they can do, maybe even their weaknesses.”

I felt something shift in my chest-not quite hope, but close to it. “You think we should ask him?”
“I think we don’t have a choice,” Lumina said. “Riley might know something too. They both spent time in that facility, both saw things we can barely imagine. If anyone has practical knowledge about nightwalkers, it’s them.”
She was right, of course. But the thought of asking those traumatized boys to relive their captivity, to dredge up memories they were barely coping with, made me feel like the worst kind of father.

“They’re children,” I said quietly. “They shouldn’t have to deal with this.”
“They’re survivors,” Lumina corrected gently. “And they’re stronger than we give them credit for. But you’re right-we need to be
careful about how we approach this. We can’t traumatize them further.”
I nodded, standing from my desk.

“Let’s go talk to them. Together.”
The living room was surprisingly peaceful when we entered. Ollie had sprawled across the couch, talking a mile a minute about something involving superheroes and plot structure. Riley and Lake sat on either side of him, actually listening with what appeared to be
genuine interest rather than just polite tolerance.
“-and that’s why the twist works so well,” Ollie was explaining, gesturing enthusiastically. “Because they set it up in the first act but
you don’t realize until-oh, hey Mom, hey Dad.”
All three boys looked up at us, and I saw the moment they registered our expressions. The peace in the room fractured slightly,
wariness creeping into their young faces.
“Is something wrong?” Lake asked, his body already tensing for potential threat.
“We need to talk,” I said, trying to keep my voice gentle despite the urgency thrumming through my veins. “About what happened at
the store today.”
Riley’s expression went carefully blank, and I recognized that as his defensive response. Whatever we were about to discuss, he
already knew it would be difficult.
“The shadow thing Mom saw?” Ollie asked, his voice smaller than usual.
“Yes,” Lumina confirmed, settling onto the couch beside him. “Lake, you said it might have been a nightwalker. Can you tell us more
about them?”
