Chapter 332

“That’s so cool,” Ollie breathed, looking at Lake with something approaching awe. “You made a trap with your portals! Can you show
me how you did it? Could we trap bad guys like that if they come here?”
Lake’s expression shifted, the playfulness fading into something more serious. “Maybe. But you’d need to know exactly where they’d be walking, and you’d need them to commit to the movement before they realized what was happening. It only worked because the nightwalker was in shadow form and moving fast-it didn’t have time to react before it fell into the loop.”
“Still cool though,” Ollie insisted.
“It was pretty cool,” I agreed, and was rewarded with a shy smile from Lake. “Though I imagine it was also terrifying, setting up a trap
for something that could have hurt you badly if it figured out what you were doing.”
The boys went quiet for a moment, the weight of that truth settling over the room. They’d both been living in a situation where creative problem-solving meant survival, where tricking a dangerous predator was just another day’s challenge.
“We looked out for each other,” Riley said finally, his voice softer. “Lake would use his portals to move things or create barriers. I
would…” He hesitated, and I saw something flicker across his face-not quite fear, but close to it.
“You would what?” Ollie asked gently.
“I would know things,” Riley said carefully. “About where people would be, what they would do. It helped us avoid trouble most of the
time.”
Precognition, I realized. Riley’s gift wasn’t just intelligence or enhanced abilities. He could see the future, or at least possible futures. The implications of that made my head spin, but I pushed those thoughts aside for later processing.
“You made a good team,” I said instead. “Still do, from what I can see.”
Lake and Riley exchanged another look, this one longer, more meaningful. There was something there-a bond forged in shared trauma and survival, deeper than friendship, more complex than brotherhood. They’d kept each other alive in a place designed to break
them. That created connections that most people would never understand.
“Yeah,” Lake said quietly. “We did.”
I stood and moved to the desk, picking up the papers they’d been working on before the wrestling match broke out. They’d filled several pages with neat handwriting, documenting nightwalker behaviors and abilities with the clinical precision of people who’d been
forced to study their enemies closely.
“This is really good work,” I said, skimming through the notes. “Detailed, organized, exactly what we need. Why don’t you take a real break? Eat some fruit, play a game, just be kids for a while. You’ve earned it.”
“We should finish the documentation first,” Lake said, always responsible, always pushing himself harder than necessary.

“The documentation will still be there in an hour, I countered gently. “And you’ll probably think of more details after you’ve had a
chance to rest your brain. Forcing it never works as well as you think it will.”
Riley was already reaching for an apple slice, and I saw the moment Lake’s resolve crumbled. He was exhausted-they both were-and
the laughter had probably burned through whatever reserves they’d been running on.
“Okay,” Lake agreed. “Just for a little while.”
The boys migrated to Ollie’s bed, crowding together in that casual physical closeness that children managed so easily. Ollie
immediately launched into questions about other things Lake could do with his portals, his imagination clearly spinning with possibilities.
Lake answered patiently, occasionally demonstrating with small portals that he conjured in the air-little shimmering circles that showed
glimpses of other parts of the room.
Riley leaned against the headboard, munching on fruit and interjecting occasional comments or corrections. His expression had
settled into something peaceful, relaxed in a way I’d never seen before. The blank mask was gone, replaced by simple contentment.
