Chapter 333

I should have left then, should have given them privacy to continue bonding without adult supervision. But I couldn’t bring myself to
move from my spot by the desk. This moment felt too precious, too fragile, too important to walk away from.
These were my children-all three of them. Ollie, who I’d carried for nine months and loved since before he drew his first breath.
Riley, who shared Ollie’s face but had lived an entirely different life full of horrors I was still discovering. And Lake, who wasn’t mine by
blood but had somehow worked his way into my heart anyway, with his fierce protectiveness and unexpected vulnerability.
They were laughing together now, Ollie having said something ridiculous that had both older boys groaning and grinning. The sound
filled the room like sunlight, warm and bright and achingly normal.
This was what I’d been fighting for during those two months in Zade’s territory. This was what made every sacrifice worth it-the
chance for these boys to have moments like this. To be silly, to share stories, to wrestle on the floor without fear of punishment. To just
be kids.
A knock on the doorframe made us all look up. Xenois stood there, and I saw his expression shift as he took in the scene-the boys
crowded on the bed, the laughter still echoing in the air, the fruit plate half-empty.
“Everything okay in here?” he asked, and I could hear the careful hope in his voice.
“Everything’s perfect,” I said, and meant it. “The boys were just taking a break from their documentation work.”
“And telling stories,” Ollie added. “Did you know Lake trapped a nightwalker in a portal loop once? Made it fall for twenty whole
minutes!”
Xenois’s eyebrows rose. “Is that so?”
Lake ducked his head, embarrassed all over again, but Riley nodded enthusiastically. “It was brilliant. The nightwalker was so dizzy
afterward it couldn’t walk straight.”
‘Sounds like we have some creative thinkers in this pack, Xenois said, and I saw Lake’s shoulders straighten slightly at the praise.
“That’s exactly the kind of out-of-the-box thinking we’re going to need if more nightwalkers show up.”
The reminder of the threat hanging over us dimmed the mood slightly, but not as much as I’d feared. The boys had found something precious in their shared laughter-resilience, maybe, or just the simple knowledge that joy was still possible even when scary things
lurked in the shadows.
“We’ll finish the documentation after we eat,” Riley said, reaching for another apple slice. “And then we can help plan defenses. Lake’s
portals could be really useful for creating barriers or escape routes.”
“And I can help too,” Ollie insisted. “I might not have portals or future-seeing or anything cool, but I’m good at thinking of stuff. Dad
says I have a creative mind.”

“You do, Xenois agreed, moving into the room to ruffle Ollie’s hair. “And every perspective helps when we’re planning strategy. We’ll take all the ideas we can get.”
The boys beamed at that-even Riley, who’d spent so long being treated as a tool rather than a person with valuable thoughts and opinions. Being included, being heard, being valued for their minds rather than just their abilities… it meant everything.
I caught Xenois’s eye and saw my own emotions reflected there. Pride in these incredible, resilient children. Fear for what might be coming. Determination to protect them no matter what it cost.
But underneath all of that, threaded through every other feeling like gold through granite, was love. Simple, fierce, unshakeable love.
These were our boys. Our pack. Our family.
And we would fight through hell itself to keep them safe.
