Chapter 335
XENOIS

“Not yet,” Lumina admitted. “But I’ve reached out to several contacts. Someone must know a practitioner who specializes in shadow or
light manipulation. It’s just a matter of finding them and convincing them to help.”
“What about the Shadow Moon Pack?” Marcus suggested.
“Zade has resources we don’t. Access to witches, warlocks, rare supernatural specialists. If you explained the situation-”
I’d rather not impose on Zade’s hospitality any more than we already have,” I said, though the suggestion had merit. “We lived in his
territory for two months. Asking for additional military support feels like admitting we can’t handle our own problems.”
“Pride is going to get people killed,” Elder Harriet said bluntly. “If Zade has resources that could help, you need to swallow your ego
and ask for them.”
She wasn’t wrong, but the words still stung. As alpha, I was supposed to be capable of protecting my pack without outside
intervention. Asking Zade for help again felt like a failure of leadership.
“I’ll consider it as a backup option,” I said finally. “But first, let’s see what we can accomplish with our own resources. Margo, any
progress on finding light magic practitioners?”
She consulted her own tablet, scrolling through what looked like dozens of messages. “I’ve got three potential leads. One is a werewitch about six hours north who supposedly specializes in illumination spells. Another is a witch coven in the next state over that might have someone with the right skill set. The third is a warlock who lives as a hermit in the mountains and allegedly has mastery over
shadow manipulation.”
“Contact all three,” I instructed.
“Offer whatever compensation they require-within reason-to get them here as quickly as possible. Make it clear this is urgent.”
“On it,” she confirmed, already typing.
“What about the children’s school?” asked Sarah, one of the pack’s educators. “If there’s a threat targeting the boys, we need to consider security at the elementary school. There are a lot of vulnerable pups there.”
Lumina and I exchanged glances. We’d been so focused on defending the pack house and territory that we hadn’t fully considered the implications for the broader community.
“We’ll need to coordinate with the school administration,” Lumina said. “Increase security there as well. Maybe implement a buddy
system so no child is ever alone, even on campus.”
“And what do we tell the other parents?” Sarah pressed. “That their children might be in danger because the alpha’s son is being

hunted by shadow monsters? That’s going to cause panic.”

“Better panic and preparation than ignorance and casualties,” I said firmly. “We’ll send out a pack-wide communication tonight. Age-
appropriate language, but honest about the threat level. Parents need to know to be vigilant, to keep their children close, to report
anything unusual.”
The meeting continued for another hour, hammering out details of patrol schedules, supply distributions, communication protocols, and emergency procedures. By the end, I had a splitting headache and a deep appreciation for just how much coordination was required to
prepare an entire pack for potential invasion.
As people filed out, still muttering amongst themselves, Marcus lingered behind. “That went better than I expected,” he said once we
were relatively alone.
“Really?” I asked. “Because I’m pretty sure half the elders think I’m being an irresponsible alpha who’s putting personal feelings above
pack safety.”
“Only half?” Marcus said with a slight smile. “I’d say you’re doing pretty well then.”
Lumina squeezed my hand. “You did the right thing. Standing by the boys, making it clear they’re part of this pack-that’s what a
good alpha does. What a good father does.”
“I just hope I can back up all those promises,” I said quietly. “If something happens, if someone gets hurt because of decisions I made
“Then we’ll deal with it together,” Lumina interrupted. “But you can’t lead from a place of fear, Xenois. You know that. The pack needs to see strength, confidence, unity. Even if you’re terrified inside, you can’t let them see it.”
She was right, of course. She usually was.
“I should check on the boys,” I said, exhaustion pulling at me. “Make sure they’re okay after spending all afternoon documenting their
trauma.”
“They were playing last I checked,” Lumina said. “Actually laughing. Riley especially. It was… it was beautiful, Xenois. Seeing them
just be kids for a little while.”
That image-Riley laughing, genuinely happy-made some of the tension ease from my shoulders. Whatever else happened, whatever threats came for us, we’d given those boys something precious. Safety. Family. The chance to heal.
“Come on,” Marcus said, heading for the door. “I’ll walk you through the new patrol schedules. James and I worked out a rotation that should give us maximum coverage without burning out our warriors too quickly.”
I followed him out of the conference room, already mentally shifting from father mode back to alpha mode. There was still so much
to do, so many preparations to make.
But as we walked through the pack house, I noticed something that made me pause. Pack members weren’t avoiding me or shooting

me resentful looks. Instead, they nodded as I passed, offered brief smiles, murmured respectful greetings.
They were afraid, yes. But they were also ready. Ready to fight, ready to protect, ready to stand together against whatever came for
92
That was what pack meant. Not just blood or territory or hierarchy, but the fundamental commitment to protect each other. To face danger together rather than sacrifice the vulnerable to save ourselves.
Elder Harriet might think I was being irresponsible. Some of the council might question my judgment.
But my pack-my true pack, the warriors and families who’d chosen to follow me-they understood.
We protected our own.
Even when it meant standing against shadow monsters and enhanced soldiers.
Even when it meant risking everything.
Because that was what family did.
And the boys-Riley, Lake, Ollie-they were family now.
Nothing was going to change that.
