Chapter 337
XENOIS
Lake and Riley both tensed, their bodies going into that alert stillness that spoke of deeply ingrained survival instincts.
“How much did you hear?” Lake asked carefully.
“Enough to know you’re thinking about contacting Dex and Snow,” I said. “And something about an active volcano that I’m very
curious about but will table for later discussion.”
Riley shot Lake an ‘I told you so’ look. Lake studiously focused on his cereal.
“Are Dex and Snow other kids from the facility?” Lumina asked gently, settling into a chair with her own slice of cake. “Friends of
yours?”

“Sort of,” Lake said. “They were in our unit. Our… I guess you’d call it our team. Andy liked to group compatible abilities together, see how they worked in combination. Riley, Dex, Snow, and I were together for about eight months before-”
He cut himself off, but I could fill in the blank. Before you escaped. Before everything went wrong.
“Dex can manipulate electricity,” Riley said quietly. “Control it, generate it, absorb it from power sources. Snow is a nightwalker, obviously. She can do all the shadow stuff that the one following Mom can do.”
“And they escaped?” I asked. “When you did?”
“Before,” Lake corrected. “Months before Sophia took Riley and before everything fell apart. They just… disappeared one night during a training exercise. Andy sent people after them, but they never found anything. It was like they vanished into thin air.”
“Dex probably fried all the electronic tracking,” Riley added. “And Snow could have used her shadow abilities to hide their trail. If they
didn’t want to be found, they wouldn’t be.”
There was something in his voice-not quite envy, but close to it. The knowledge that some children had managed to escape while he
and Lake had remained trapped.
“You said Snow hates werewolves,” Lumina said carefully. “What happened to her family?”
Riley and Lake exchanged glances, having some silent conversation with just their eyes. Finally, Riley spoke.
“Her whole family was killed when she was two. She was an orphan and had been picked by kind werewitches who settled down near some werewolf cities, but not crossing the boundary which was illegal. Wiped out by a rival pack in some territory dispute. Snow survived because she’d already manifested her nightwalker abilities-she hid in the shadows while everyone she loved was murdered around her.
She watched it happen. All of it.”

Chapter 337
…
Jesus. No wonder the girl hated werewolves. That kind of trauma at such a young age would create deep, possibly insurmountable
hatred.
92
“Andy found her living on the streets later, she picked me up as a werewitch and she followed cause she was grateful to werewitches”
Lake continued. “Andy offered her shelter, food, training in how to use her abilities. Snow agreed because she thought Andy would help
her get revenge on the pack that killed her family.”
“Did she?” Ollie asked quietly. Even his usually cheerful demeanor had dimmed in the face of such a horrific story.
“Yes,” Riley said flatly. “Andy helped her slaughter the entire pack when Snow was four or five, I don’t really know how old she is now? But she was bigger than me a little so I was probably younger, Any way, she killed every adult, every teenager, every child. Andy recorded it, kept it as a training video to show other subjects what we were capable of if properly motivated.”
The kitchen went silent except for the hum of the refrigerator. I felt nauseous, my wolf howling with rage at the casual evil Andy had represented. Using a traumatized child’s need for revenge to turn her into a mass murderer, then weaponizing that violence to terrorize
other children.
“That’s why Snow wouldn’t help us,” Riley continued. “Even if we could contact her, even if we could convince her we need help, she’s not going to fight for a werewolf pack. She’d probably see this as justice-werewolves finally getting what they deserve.”
