Chapter 341
XENOIS
The moment held, fragile and precious. Three boys-two who’d survived horrors and one who was trying to understand-connected by
something deeper than blood or circumstance. Brotherhood, maybe. Or just the simple recognition that they were all in this together,
whatever came next.
“Alright,” Lumina said eventually, breaking the spell with gentle practicality. “It’s after two in the morning. Everyone finish your
cereal, brush your teeth, and get to bed. We can continue this conversation tomorrow when we’re all less exhausted and emotional.”
There were murmurs of agreement, and the boys dutifully finished their midnight snacks, I caught Riley looking back at me with an
expression I couldn’t quite read.
“Dad?” he said quietly. “Thank you. For not being mad. About the volcano thing. Or the secrets.”
“I’m not mad,” I assured him. “I’m grateful you trusted us enough to tell us. Even if we did kind of eavesdrop to hear it first.”
That earned a small smile, there and gone in an instant, but real..
“Okay,” I said, standing and infusing my voice with parental authority. “It’s after midnight. Everyone needs to be in bed. We can continue strategic discussions tomorrow at a reasonable hour.”
“But- Lake started.
“Bed, Lumina repeated firmly. “No arguments. Even geniuses need sleep.
The boys grumbled but complied, carrying their cereal bowls to the sink and rinsing them with the automatic movements of children who’d been trained in discipline. As they filed past toward the stairs, I caught Lake’s arm gently.
“What you said earlier,” I said quietly, pitching my voice for only him to hear. “About sending someone to an active volcano.
Lake’s expression shuttered immediately, going carefully blank. “That was-I didn’t mean—*
‘I’m not angry, I clarified quickly. “I’m not judging. I just need to know what kind of range your portals have. If we’re going to incorporate them into defense strategies, I need to understand their limitations.”
Lake studied me for a long moment, clearly trying to determine if this was safe information to share. Finally, he nodded.
“Theoretically unlimited range,” he said quietly. “As long as I’ve been to a location before or can see it clearly-physically or in an image-I can open a portal there. Distance doesn’t matter. I could portal to the other side of the planet if I wanted to.”
‘Did he survive?” I asked, not sure which answer I wanted to hear.

“I don’t know,” Lake said honestly. “I didn’t stick around to check. Saving Riley was more important.”
I pulled Lake into a hug, feeling him stiffen with surprise before gradually relaxing against me. “You did what you had to do to protect someone,” I said quietly. “That’s not something to be ashamed of.”
“Andy said I was a weapon,” Lake mumbled against my shirt.
“Said my portals made me the most valuable asset in her collection. Sometimes I think she was right.”
“You’re not a weapon,” I said fiercely. “You’re a child with a gift who was forced into impossible situations. There’s a difference. And here, in this pack, you’ll never be treated as an asset or a tool. You’re family. That’s all.”
Lake didn’t respond, but I felt his arms tighten around me briefly before he pulled away, swiping at his eyes.
“Bed,” I said gently. “We can talk more tomorrow. Besides you all have school to prepare for.”
He nodded and headed upstairs, his footsteps careful and quiet on the wooden steps. I watched him go, my heart aching for what
these boys had endured.
“School seems really unimportant compared to shadow monsters planning to kidnap us,” Ollie observed.

“School is how we maintain normalcy,” Lumina countered. “How we show that we’re not going to let fear dictate our lives. Besides, you have that reading presentation tomorrow. You’ve been working on it all week.”
Ollie’s face brightened slightly. “Oh yeah! I’m doing mine on superheroes and why Captain Justice is better than all the other heroes
combined.”
“Controversial take,” Lake said, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Pretty sure Captain Justice is objectively the worst superhero.”
“Take that back!” Ollie gasped, looking genuinely offended. “Captain Justice has super strength AND flight AND laser vision! He’s the
most powerful!”
“Being powerful doesn’t make you the best,” Riley said, entering the debate with unexpected enthusiasm. “It’s about character development and moral complexity. Captain Justice is boring because he never struggles with hard choices.”
“He struggles plenty!” Ollie protested. “In issue forty-seven he had to choose between saving the city or saving his sidekick!”
“And he saved both because he’s overpowered,” Lake countered. “That’s not a real struggle.”
I caught Lumina’s eye and saw my own amusement reflected there. Somehow, in the span of minutes, we’d gone from discussing child soldiers and revenge missions to arguing about superhero comics. It was so perfectly, absurdly normal that I wanted to bottle this moment and keep it forever.
“Alright, superhero scholars,” I said. “Take your debate upstairs. You can continue arguing about Captain Justice’s merits while you

brush your teeth.”

The boys complied, heading toward the stairs still discussing superhero power levels and narrative arcs. Their voices faded as they
climbed, leaving Lumina and me alone in the kitchen.
“We need to make sure this never happens again,” Lumina said fiercely. “Once this immediate threat is handled, we need to reach out to other packs, other supernatural communities. Establish better communication networks so something like this can’t hide in plain
sight.”
“Agreed,” I said. “But first, we survive. Then we can work on changing the world.”
