Chapter 342

I woke to the sensation of being watched. Not the uncomfortable, predatory awareness that had haunted me since discovering the
nightwalker’s presence, but something warmer. Safer. I blinked my eyes open slowly, adjusting to the soft morning light filtering through our bedroom curtains, and found Xenois propped on one elbow beside me, his gaze fixed on my face with an intensity that made my
breath catch.
“What are you looking at?” I asked, my voice still rough with sleep.
His expression softened, something raw and vulnerable flickering across his features. “The prettiest thing ever,” he said quietly. “I can’t believe I almost lost this. Lost you. All because of my stupidity in allowing Sophia back into our lives.”

The words hit me square in the chest, unexpected and disarming. My marriage to Xenois had been rocky for months now-years, if I was being honest with myself. The Sophia situation had been the breaking point, the final straw that had shattered what little trust remained between us. Even now, after learning the truth about the spell, about the manipulation and control, I wasn’t entirely sure where we stood. The foundation of our relationship had been damaged, possibly beyond repair.
But I had chosen to come back. After Thorne had pulled me aside and explained in hushed, urgent tones that Xenois had been spelled, that Sophia’s magic had twisted his feelings and made him believe he loved her, I had made the conscious decision to return. Not because I had to. Xenois had given me back my freedom, had told me I could leave without consequence. But because some part of me- some stubborn, hopeful part-wanted to give our marriage a second chance.
“Being romantic this morning isn’t going to make me fall in love with you,” I said, though I couldn’t quite keep the smile from
tugging at my lips.
“I’m just being realistic,” Xenois murmured, leaning down to press a kiss to my cheek. Then another to my jaw. Then the curve of my
neck, his lips warm and soft against my skin.
My wolf stirred immediately, interested in pursuing this further. It had been so long since we’d had any real intimacy-four months, maybe longer. The distance between us had been measured in more than just physical space. But now, with the morning light painting everything gold and Xenois’s mouth trailing heat down my throat, that distance felt suddenly, blessedly smaller.
I was acutely aware of my nightdress-short and see-through, barely there at all. It gave Xenois ample ammunition this morning, and he seemed determined to use every advantage. His hand slid along my waist, pulling me closer as he continued his assault of kisses along
my collarbone.
He pressed me down against the mattress, then paused, his eyes searching mine for any sign of objection. I could have stopped this. Could have pulled away, reminded him that trust wasn’t rebuilt through sex, that we still had so much to work through.
But I didn’t want to. My body was already responding, already aching for this connection we’d denied ourselves for months. So I reached up instead, tangling my fingers in his hair and pulling him down to kiss me properly.

The kiss was everything-desperate and tender and fierce all at once. Xenois made a low sound in the back of his throat, his control
visibly fraying as he deepened the kiss. I felt his arousal pressing against my thigh, hard and insistent, and my own body responded in
kind. Slick heat gathered between my legs, my wolf practically purring with satisfaction.
It got intense quickly. Months of separation, of tension and hurt feelings and unspoken longing, all poured into this moment. Xenois’s
mouth left mine to trail down my neck again, and this time he didn’t stop. He sucked hard at the sensitive skin there, leaving what would
definitely be a visible mark, then moved lower to do the same to my chest.
