Chapter 357
D
For a moment, I thought Ollie might actually refuse-might actually call our bluff and force this confrontation to its absolute limit. But then his shoulders slumped, and he stepped back from the switch, looking suddenly like the five-year-old child he actually was rather
than the fierce defender he’d been trying to be.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered, though his expression suggested he wasn’t sorry at all. “But they were being mean about Riley and Lake.”
“I know,” I said softly, moving to pull him into a hug. “And I appreciate you wanting to protect your brothers. But threatening pack elders-even ones who are being unreasonable-isn’t the way to do it.”
I looked up at the elders, who were all staring at Ollie with expressions ranging from shock to fear to grudging respect. Elder Johnson looked particularly shaken, probably realizing exactly how close he’d been to facing a nightwalker without the protection of that light
prison.
“I think,” Thorne said carefully, breaking the tense silence, “that everyone has made their positions clear. Perhaps we should table this discussion for now and reconvene when emotions aren’t running quite so high.”
“Agreed,” Elder Harriet said quickly, clearly eager to escape this increasingly uncomfortable situation.
“We’ll schedule a formal council meeting to discuss security protocols and any necessary policy changes. In the meantime, the boys
stay where they are under alpha protection.”
It wasn’t exactly an enthusiastic endorsement, but it was better than continued argument. Elder Morrison and Elder Chen both nodded agreement, clearly ready to leave. Even Elder Johnson, after a long moment, gave a grudging nod.
“This isn’t over,” he said, directing his words at Xenois rather than me. “The council will have its say on this matter.”
‘I look forward to it,” Xenois said coldly. “Now if you’ll excuse us, my family needs some privacy,”
I watched the elders file out, Thorne offering me an apologetic look as he passed and Marcus promising to have the security team in place within the hour. When the door finally closed behind them, I felt some of the tension drain from my shoulders.
But only some of it. Because Lazarus was still in our basement, nightwalkers were still hunting my children, and the pack elders had made it very clear that political battles were just beginning.
“Well,” Riley said into the silence, his voice carrying dark humor, “that went about as badly as expected.”
“We should start documenting everything,” Lake added, already shifting into strategic mode. “Build a case for the council meeting. Gather evidence of our value to the pack, testimonials from people we’ve helped, statistical analyses of threat levels with and without our
presence.”
They were already treating this like a military operation-gathering intelligence, preparing defenses, strategizing their survival. And I hated that they had to think that way. Hated that five-year-olds were planning political campaigns instead of worrying about spelling

“Later,” I said firmly. “Right now, we’re going to have lunch, and then you’re all going to rest, and we’re going to try to have at least a
few hours that feel like a normal family day. The politics and planning can wait.”
All three boys looked skeptical that anything about our lives could ever be normal again. And honestly? They might be right.
But I was their mother. And if I couldn’t give them safety and normalcy and peace, I could at least give them love and protection and the fierce certainty that I would never, ever stop fighting for them.
No matter what the elders said. No matter what threats came. No matter what it cost.
They were my sons. And I’d burn the whole world down before I let anyone take them from me.
