Chapter 386
XENOIS
Theodore settled into the chair across from my desk, his weathered hds folded in his lap. For a long moment, he just studied me, his
expression sad and knowing.
“Your parents loved you very much,” he said finally. “I want you to understand that first. Whatever they’ve done, whatever choices they’ve made-it came from love. Misguided, perhaps. Complicated, certainly. But ove nonetheless.”
“Then why did they leave?” I demanded, my patience fraying. “Why diniss you and the rest of the staff after thirty years? Why lock up the house and disappear without telling anyone?”
“Because they were torn,” Theodore said quietly. “Between their love for their grandson and their fear of what the future holds. Between their loyalty to pack tradition and their growing understanding that those traditions have caused harm. Between their desire to support you and their inability to reconcile what you’re building with everything they believe.”
He paused, seeming to choose his words carefully.
“The night you returned with Riley and Lake, your mother called me. She was… distraught. She’d seen the boys, seen how enhanced they were, seen Lake’s magical abilities. And she knew-they both knew-that accepting those children meant accepting fundamental changes to pack structure, pack hierarchy, everything they’d spent their lives defending.”
“So they left rather than adapt,” I said, hearing the bitterness in my own voice. “Rather than try to be better.”
“It’s more complicated than that,” Theodore insisted. “Your parents have secrets, Alpha. Things from before you were born, from the early days of their leadership. Wars they fought, choices they made, alliances they forged in blood.”
I leaned forward, every instinct suddenly alert. “What kind of secrets?
“The kind that haunt them,” Theodore said grimly. “You know your parents as former Alpha and Luna-strong, decisive, traditional leaders. But before they settled into that role, before they had you and Xena, they were feared throughout the supernatural community. No nightwalker stepped on Blackwood territory uninvited. No werewitch tested their borders. No other pack challenged their claim.”
“Because of pack laws-” I started.
“Before laws, there were wars, Theodore interrupted. “Battles for territory, for resources, for dominance. Your parents fought in those wars, Alpha. They made choices-brutal choices-to secure this pack’s safety and future. They formed alliances that most modern pack members would find unconscionable. They did things…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “They did what they believed necessary to protect their people.”
‘What does any of this have to do with them leaving now?” Lumina ased.
“Because the world they helped create-one built on strict hierarchies and clear boundaries between different supernatural groups-is the world you’re dismantling, Theodore explained. “Every policy you change, very inclusion you champion, every traditional rule you overturn… it’s not just progress to them. It’s a rejection of everything they sacrificed or. Everything they compromised themselves to build.”
I sat back, trying to process this new information. My parents had always been traditional, yes. Conservative in their views. But I’d thought that was just… preference. Cultural belief. Not something rooted in active violence and war.
“You’re saying they’re afraid,” I said slowly. “Not just of change, but of what change might cost?”
1/2
I’m saying they’re afraid that the alliances they forged, the promises to haunt them if the supernatural world shifts too dramatically,” Theodore signed in blood between pack leaders and nightwalker lords and werewitch
‘And now I’m threatening to break it,” 1 finished.
Theodore nodded. “They couldn’t stand with you-not publicly, not w couldn’t stand against you either. You’re their son. Ollie is their grandson.
