Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 399

Chapter 399

ZADE

Shawn looked at me with eyes that were far too old for his face, filled with guilt and pain that shouldn’t belong to someone so young. “But I didn’t fight. I just stood there while they took them away. I could have used my power, could have tried to stop them-”

And you would have gotten yourself killed or captured,” Lyn said gently. “Shawn, I felt your memories through our connection. There were at least a dozen attackers, all trained combatants with coordinated tactics You couldn’t have stopped them alone. All you would have accomplished is adding yourself to their prisoner count.”

“But-

“But nothing, Lynn interrupted, her tone brooking no argument. “You survived. You reached out for help. You provided crucial intelligence that’s going to help us mount a rescue operation. That’s what matters. Not some impossible heroic fantasy where you single-handedly defeat a dozen supernatural warriors.”

else.”

Marcus returned with water and food, handing them to Lynn, who immediately pressed the water bottle into Shawn’s hands.

“Drink,” she commanded. “Slowly. Your stomach’s going to rebel if you chug it, and we don’t need you throwing up on top of everything

Shawn obeyed, taking small sips while Theo worked on cleaning and bandaging the worst of his cuts. I stayed close, providing silent support while the healers did their work.

“The attack happened about fifteen miles from here,” Shawn said between sips of water. “There’s a bend in the road where it goes through a narrow valley. They were waiting there-nightwalkers in the trees, werewitches on the ground, fae positioned on the ridges. They had us surrounded before we knew what was happening.”

“How many exactly?” Rivers asked, pulling out a notebook to record details.

“Maybe fifteen total?” Shawn’s brow furrowed as he tried to remember “It’s hard to say-things happened so fast. But there were at least five nightwalkers, maybe six werewitches, and three or four fae that I saw

“That’s a significant force,” I said, exchanging glances with Rivers. “Coordinating that many individuals from different supernatural species suggests serious organization and planning.”

“They knew we were coming,” Shawn continued. “Or at least they knew to watch that route. One of the nightwalkers-a woman with white hair-she said something about ‘finally intercepting the Blackwood elders. Like they’d been waiting for the right opportunity.”

‘Did they say where they were taking Samuel and Silvia?” Lyn asked.

Shawn shook his head miserably, “No. They just kept talking about juice and making examples and revenge for the territorial wars. And then the female werewitch-the one with scars on her hands-she looked me and said I didn’t have to be part of this, that I was one of them,

that I should come with them voluntarily.”

“But you didn’t,” I said.

was too scared. I didn’t know what they wanted or why they were doing this. So I just… stood

“No.” Shawn’s voice dropped to a whisper.

there. And they took Samuel and Silvia and left me behind.”

“Which was the smart choice,” Lyn assured him. “If you’d gone with them, we’d have no way of knowing what happened or where to start

looking. You did the right thing.”

Do you remember anything else?” Rivers pressed gently. “Any names mentioned, any identifying marks on the attackers, any discussion of

where they might be based?”

Shawn was quiet for a moment, clearly trying to recall details through the fog of trauma and exhaustion. Then his eyes widened slightly.

“The nightwalker with white hair,” he said slowly. “She had a symbol

her jacket-a crescent moon with a sword through it. And one of the werewitches said something about reporting back to Jerome. Said Jerome would want to know they’d successfully captured the Blood Luna.”

I felt my blood run cold. Jerome. As in Jerome Thorne-the elder nigh walker whose brother Lazarus we currently had imprisoned for his

involvement in the facility conspiracy.

“Fuck,’ I breathed. “This is revenge for Lazarus.”

“And for the territorial wars,” Lyn added grimly. “Shawn, did any of them mention specific grudges? Specific things Samuel and Silvia did

that they were seeking justice for?”

“The woman with white hair said her nest was burned by the Blackwoods,” Shawn recalled. “Said Silvia killed her entire family forty years ago. And one of the fae said something about broken treaties and blood depts.”

I ran a hand through my hair, trying to process the implications. This wasn’t just about current pack politics or objections to Xenois’s reforms. This was about old wounds that had never healed, about people who’d spent decades waiting for a chance at revenge.

“The symbol Shawn described, Marcus said quietly, “that’s the mark of the Silvercrest nest. They’re based in the mountains between here and Moonridge. Isolated, traditional, and known for holding grudges.”

“So we have a target location,” Rivers said. “Or at least a starting point for investigation.”

“We also have a massive problem,” I added. “Because if Jerome Thornes leading this operation and he’s working with werewitches and fae who have their own grudges against the Blackwoods, we’re looking at a coalition that’s going to be very difficult to break.”

“Difficult but not impossible,” Lyn said, his voice carrying quiet determination. “We have intelligence now. We have Shawn’s testimony and the symbol identification. We can start building a rescue plan instead of going in blind.”

Lynn had finished her immediate medical treatment of Shawn and was now checking Lyn’s vitals with obvious concern.

“Your blood pressure is elevated and your magical reserves are dangerously low,” she announced. “You need to rest before you do anything else strenuous.”

I’m fine-

“You’re not fine,” Lynn interrupted. “You just maintained a mental cooction across massive distance for over an hour while under stress. That’s equivalent to running a marathon while solving complex math proms. You need rest, hydration, and probably actual food before you do any more magic.”

I watched Lyn start to argue, then visibly force himself to accept his ster’s assessment. One of the things I loved about him was his ability to recognize when he was being unreasonable and adjust accordingly.
