Chapter 401

tond in wey office, waring at the phone in my hard for a solid ming after Zade hung up, trying to process everything he’d just told me

My parents had been kidnapped by a coalition led by ferome Thorne the brother of the nightwalker we currently held prisoner. They were being held somewhere nest the sherrrest nest, probably being tortured fe crimes they d committed forty years ago during the territorial wars. And I had twelve hours to wait before mounting a rescue operation.

Twelve hours.

Seven hundred and twenty minutes for my parents to suffer at the hands of people who’d spent decades planning their revenge.

My wolf was bowling inside me, demanding action, demanding I shift and run toward the mountains and tear apart anyone standing between me and my family. Every alpha instinct I had screamed that waiting was wrong, that hesitation meant failure, that real leaders acted immediately to protect their own.

But I also knew Zade was right. Going in blind, with no backup, fueled by rage instead of strategy-that was how alphas got themselves killed and made situations worse for everyone they were supposed to protect.

I’d learned that lesson the hard way over the years. Learned it when I’d almost started a war with a neighboring pack because I’d reacted emotionally instead of strategically. Learned it when I’d nearly gotten pack members killed because I’d prioritized looking strong over being

smart.

My father had taught me that leadership meant controlling your impulses, channeling rage into effective action, thinking three steps ahead even when your heart was screaming to charge forward.

Ironic that I was using his lessons to plan his own rescue.

A soft knock on my office door pulled me from my spiraling thoughts. Before I could respond, the door opened and three worried faces appeared-Ollie, Riley, and Lake, all clearly aware that something was wrong.

“Daddy?” Ollie said quietly. “Marcus told us you were on the phone with Uncle Zade. Did something happen?”

I looked at my sons-at Ollie’s red-rimmed eyes that showed he’d been crying about his grandparents, at Riley’s carefully controlled expression that masked deep concern, at Lake’s anxious fidgeting as he picked up on the emotional tension in the room.

I could lie. Could tell them everything was fine, that the adults were handling things, that they didn’t need to worry. Could protect them from the harsh reality of what was happening.

But I’d promised myself when I brought Riley and Lake home that I wouldn’t lie to my children. That I’d treat them with the respect of honesty, even when the truth was complicated and scary.

They deserved to know what was happening. Especially Ollie, who was already heartbroken about his grandparents leaving.

‘Come in,” I said, moving to sit on the couch rather than staying behind my desk. Less formal, more family. “Close the door and sit down.

We need to talk.”

The boys exchanged worried glances but obeyed, arranging themselves on the couch facing me. Ollie immediately curled against my side,
