Chapter 402

We know whos behind the kidnapping-a nightwalker named jerome Thorne and his coalition. They’re seeking revenge for things you grandparents did during the territorial wars forty years ago. We have intelligence about where they might be holding them, and are to coordinating a rescue operation.”

When? Riley asked, his voice carefully controlled but carrying an edge of barely suppressed panic. When are we going to rescue them?”

Zade and I are giving ourselves twelve hours to plan properly,” I said. To gather intelligence, coordinate with scouts, assemble a strike team that can handle multiple supernatural species. Then we go in with overwhelming force and bring them home.”

Twelve hours? Ollie’s voice was muffled against my shirt. “That’s so long. What if they hurt Grandma and Grandpa during that time? What

“Your grandparents are survivors,” I interrupted gently. “They fought in the territorial wars, faced threats we can’t even imagine, and came out stronger. They know how to endure, how to resist, how to stay alive until rescue comes. Twelve hours is nothing compared to what they’ve

survived before.”

I was trying to convince myself as much as I was trying to convince Ollie. Trying to believe that my parents-both in their sixties now, decades removed from active combat-could hold out against enemies who had every reason to make them suffer.

“Why did they leave in the first place?” Lake asked quietly. “If they knew it was dangerous, if there were people who wanted revenge, why

did they go to Moonridge?”

It was a good question. One I’d been asking myself since Theodore had given me my mother’s letter.

“They went to try to protect us,” I said slowly, pulling out the letter from my pocket and unfolding it. “Your grandmother left this for me. She explained that they were going to Moonridge to call in old favors, to renegotiate treaties, to try to prevent retaliation for the changes we’re making to pack structure.”

I read portions of the letter aloud-carefully editing out some of the more complicated political details, but keeping enough that the boys could understand the situation. That my parents weren’t running away, but running toward danger to shield their family from consequences of

their own past.

“So they left to protect us,” Riley said slowly. “To protect Ollie and Lake and the pack from people who were angry about you accepting enhanced children and dismantling traditional hierarchies.”

“Essentially, yes.”

“But they got captured anyway,” Lake said, his voice small. “So now they’re in danger and we’re in danger and everything they were trying

to prevent is happening anyway.”

The brutal logic of that assessment hit hard. My parents had tried to handle threats on their own, tried to shield us from the fallout of their past choices, and instead they’d walked straight into an ambush that left them helpless and us exposed.

“We’ll fix it,” I said firmly. “We’re going to rescue them, bring them home safely, and then we’re going to deal with Jerome Thorne and

anyone else who thinks threatening my family is acceptable.”

“How?” Ollie asked, pulling back enough to look at my face. “How are we going to rescue them? Where are they being held? How many

people are guarding them? What if it’s a trap?”
