Chapter 404

Tim otsing back, and firmly “I pense you, To coming back. Wygrandparents, Were all going to come home together.

You can’t promise that,” Riley said, het voice muffled. “You can’t guate the cuts of a combat operation spicet dreven numbe with uncertain intelligence

“You’re right,” I admitted. I can’t guarantee it. But I can promise that do everything to my power to make it happen. That I’ll be smart and strategic and careful. That I have backup and support and the best possible plan. And that I won’t take unnecessary risks that would leave you without a father.”

We sat like that for several minutes, just holding each other, drawing comfort from physical closeness and shared worry. I memorized the feeling-the weight of my sons against me, the sound of their breathing, the trust they were placing in me despite their fear.

This was what I was fighting for. For these three boys who needed me who depended on me, who deserved to grow up in a world where being different didn’t mean being dangerous.

Eventually, Ollie pulled back, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. “Can we at least know the plan? Can you tell us what you’re going to do so we’re not just sitting here imagining worst-case scenarios?”

I considered that request, then nodded. They deserved to know. And honestly, talking through the plan would help me refine it, identify

potential problems, think through contingencies.

“Okay,” I agreed. “Here’s what we’re looking at. Zade’s team rescued Shawn about an hour ago-he’s the werewitch who was with your grandparents when they were attacked. He’s providing intelligence about the ambush location, the number of attackers, and identifying marks that suggest they’re based near the Silvercrest nest.”

I moved to my desk and pulled up a map on my computer, gesturing for the boys to join me. They clustered around the screen as I highlighted relevant locations.

“The Silvercrest nest is here,” I pointed to a mountain range about sixty miles northeast of our territory. “It’s isolated, defensible, and known for being traditional and insular. They don’t welcome outsiders and they have a reputation for holding grudges-which makes sense if they’re harboring people seeking revenge for the territorial wars.”

“How do we know that’s where they’re holding Samuel and Silvia?” Riley asked, studying the map with intense focus.

“We don’t know for certain,” I admitted.

“But Shawn described a symbol worn by one of the attackers-a crescent moon with a sword through it. That’s the mark of the Silvercrest nest. Combined with Jerome Thorne’s known connections to that area and the ambush happening on the route to Moonridge, it’s our best lead.”

“So we’re making assumptions,” Riley said slowly. “Operating on probability rather than certainty.”

“Welcome to real-world tactical operations,” I said dryly. “We almost never have perfect information. We make educated guesses based on available intelligence and adjust as situations develop.”

“What’s the plan once we locate them?” Lake asked.

“Zade’s scouts are doing reconnaissance right now,” I explained. “They’re gathering information about guard numbers, security measures, building layouts, anything that will help us plan an approach. Once we have that intelligence, we’ll assemble a strike team-probably me, Zade,

some of our best warriors, and possibly Lyn it his magical abilities would

Why Lyn? Ollie asked.

“Because Lyn’s a werewitch with gravity manipulation powers,’ I saidle can make enemies helpless, create barriers, control the battlefield in ways normal werewolves can’t. If we’re facing a coalition of different supernatural species, having someone with unique magical abilities could be the difference between success and failure.”

I traced potential approach routes on the map, thinking aloud as I worked through logistics.

“We’ll probably go in at night-gives us cover and puts nightwalkers on more equal footing rather than in full daylight when they’re strongest. We split into teams: one for extraction, one for distraction, one for perimeter control. Fast in, grab Samuel and Silvia, fast out before they can organize a proper response.”
