I’d been expecting this. Had known the moment I told them about the kidnapping that they’d want to be involved, to contribute, to feel like they were doing something rather than sitting helplessly while adults made decisions.

“No,” I said firmly. “You cannot help with the rescue operation. You’re children, and I’m not bringing children into a combat situation against a coalition of hostile supernaturals.”

“No buts,” I interrupted, using alpha authority to make my position clear. “This is not negotiable. You three are going to stay here, in pack territory, protected by guards and security measures. You’re going to let the adults handle the rescue. That’s final.”

“You’re also inexperienced, partially trained, and emotionally compromised,” I countered.

“Riley, you’ve had what-three years of self-defense training? Lake, you’re still learning to control your portal abilities without exhausting yourself.
