Chapter 477

“He’ll be furious if he finds out we didn’t inform him right away,” I said.

fury.”

“He’ll be furious regardless,” Samuel said pragmatically. “At least this way he gets a few more hours of peace before dealing with the

“Besides,” Silvia added, “you’re second-in-command. This is exactly the kind of situation you’re supposed to handle independently. Show some initiative.”

“I have initiative,” I protested.

“Then use it to let my son have one uninterrupted evening with his mate,” she said firmly. “The world will not end if he’s unreachable for a few more hours.”

I looked at Marcus, who shrugged. “She’s not wrong. And honestly, if we bother Xenois every time something happens, we’re just reinforcing his belief that he can never step away.”

That was also a valid point.

“Fine,” I conceded. “We don’t contact them tonight. But first thing tomorrow morning, I’m briefing Xenois on everything that happened.”

“Acceptable,” Silvia agreed.

I spent the next hour coordinating security responses, interviewing the captured infiltrators-who remained frustratingly silent-and reviewing how they’d managed to breach our defenses.

The answer was disturbingly simple: they’d had inside help.

Someone in our pack had provided information about our security systems, our backup generators, and the basement cell layout. Someone had been working with Jerome’s coalition to plan this rescue operation.

Which meant we had a traitor.

“Start investigating everyone who had access to sensitive security information,” I told Marcus. “Quietly. I don’t want to start a witch hunt, but we need to identify who helped these infiltrators.”

“On it,” Marcus confirmed.

By the time everything was secured and I’d finished my reports, it was past midnight. I was exhausted, frustrated, and deeply concerned about the implications of this attack.

But I’d also handled it. Without Xenois. Without panicking or making critical errors.

Maybe Silvia was right. Maybe I did need to trust my own capabilities more instead of constantly deferring to the alpha.

I made my way through the portal to Zade’s territory, intending to update him on the situation and establish coordination in case

Jerome tried similar attacks in multiple locations.

I found Rivers waiting for me, his expression concerned.

“Thorne,” he said. “I heard about the attack. Is everyone okay?’

“Everyone’s fine,” I assured him. “Attackers captured, prisoner still secured. It was handled.”

“By you, Rivers said.

“By me, I confirmed. With help from a five-year-old who has better tactical instincts than most trained warriors.”

Rivers pulled me into a hug, and I let myself lean into him for a moment. Let myself acknowledge that despite handling the crisis

professionally, I’d been terrified. That if Lake hadn’t intervened, if the infiltrators had succeeded, the consequences would have been

catastrophic.

“You did good,” Rivers said quietly. “Xenois is lucky to have you as second.”

“Xenois is going to kill me for not contacting him immediately,” I corrected.

“Xenois needs to learn that his pack can function without him constantly managing every detail, Rivers said. “This proved that. You

proved that.”

Maybe. Or maybe I’d just earned myself a spectacular lecture about proper emergency protocols.

Either way, I’d deal with it tomorrow.

Tonight, I was just grateful everyone had survived.

And that Lake had apparently decided portable solar portals were a valid defensive strategy.

This family was absolutely insane.

But we were also still standing, still fighting, still protecting each other.
