Chapter 476

“But you needed help, Lake said reasonably. “And I knew I could make portals to the sun. Riley calculated the angles and told me
where to aim.”
“Riley helped?” I asked.
“He’s upstairs with Ollie making sure nobody else tries to hurt anyone,” Lake explained. “We have a system.*
Of course they did. Because apparently five-year-olds in this pack had tactical coordination systems.
“Where are your parents?” I asked.
“Dad and Mom went to the cabin,” Lake said. “The one in Uncle Zade’s territory. For alone time. Grandma said not to bother them
unless it was really important.”
I closed my eyes briefly, feeling a headache building. Xenois and Lumina had finally taken a break, finally disconnected for some
much-needed private time, and I was going to have to interrupt them because we’d just been attacked in our own pack house.
“It’s really important,” I said.
“I thought so,” Lake agreed. “Should I portal to them?”
“No,” I said quickly, imagining Lake opening a portal directly into wherever Xenois and Lumina were having their romantic getaway.
“I’ll call them. You go back upstairs with your brothers. Make sure everyone’s safe.”
“Okay!” Lake bounded up the stairs with the kind of energy that suggested almost being attacked by infiltrators was just another
Tuesday.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Xenois’s number, already composing the apology for interrupting his first real break in weeks.
It went straight to voicemail.
Right. Because Lyn had made him turn it off.
I tried Lumina’s phone. Also voicemail.
“Fuck,” I muttered.
“Problem?” Marcus asked, appearing beside me.

“Can’t reach Xenois or Lamina,” I said. Their phones are off because they’re supposed to be having uninterrupted couple time.”
“We could handle this without bothering them,” Marcus suggested. “The threat’s contained, prisoners secured. We can brief them when
they return.”
I wanted to agree. Wanted to let Xenois have his break without dragging him back into crisis management.
But this was an organized attack on our pack house. An infiltration that had bypassed our security and nearly succeeded in freeing a
high-value prisoner.
This wasn’t something I could just handle quietly.
*I’ll portal to Zade’s territory,” I decided. “Have someone there contact the cabin. Xenois needs to know about this immediately.”
“He’s going to be pissed,” Marcus observed.
“He’s always pissed about something.” I said. “At least this time it’s justified.”
I headed upstairs, checking on pack members as I went. Everyone was shaken but unharmed. The kids-Lake, Riley, and Ollie-had
apparently taken it upon themselves to organize the younger pack members into safe rooms and establish a defense perimeter.
Because of course they had.
Silvia and Samuel were in the main living area, both armed and looking like they were ready to fight despite still recovering from
their own recent trauma.
“Status?” Silvia demanded.
“Infiltration attempt,” I reported. “Three attackers trying to free Lazarus from the basement. We captured them. Lake saved the day
with improvised portal-based UV lighting.”
“That’s my grandson,” Silvia said proudly.
“Where’s Xenois?” Samuel asked.
“At Zade’s cabin with Lumina,” I said. “Phones off. I’m going to portal over and have someone contact them.”
