Chapter 490
SHAWN
Rage burned through me, hotter than any plasma blast.
“Everyone stay together, I commanded. “We’re going to the elementary building. Anyone who can fight, be ready. Anyone who can’t, stay in the middle of the group. Move!”
We ran through hallways that felt like war zones. I lost count of how many attackers I vaporized-nightwalkers, fae, rogue werewolves, things I didn’t have names for. My plasma abilities weren’t showing any signs of fatigue, which was good because I was using them constantly.
Behind me, the Underground members were fighting too. Marcus was using his sound manipulation to disorient enemies. Daniela had created water
shields that deflected incoming attacks. Nathan and Izzy were using their enhanced physical abilities to physically throw attackers away from our group.
Even Luna-quarter vampire, normally so careful about hiding what she was-had stopped pretending. She moved with vampire speed, her enhanced
strength allowing her to snap necks and break bones with brutal efficiency.
The chemistry class students were watching all of this with expressions that ranged from shock to awe to terror.
We burst through the doors to the courtyard between buildings, and I finally got a clear view of the elementary section.
It was a battlefield.
Creatures were attacking from multiple directions, trying to overwhelm the defenses. Pack security was fighting desperately to hold them back. Teachers
were shielding students with their own bodies.
And in the center of it all-Riley and Lake.
I’d known they were trained. Had been told about the facility where they’d been held, about the experiments and conditioning and forced development of their abilities. Had heard stories about how they’d captured Lazarus and helped during the rescue operation.
But seeing them fight was something else entirely.
Riley wasn’t just using precognition-he was weaponizing it. He’d shout warnings a split second before attacks on to dodge or block. He was directing the entire defensive effort like a tiny general, his tactical mind processing the
civing defenders just enough time
most adults could react.
And Lake-
Lake was creating portals everywhere. Not just evacuation portals to get students to safety, but offensive portals Opening gateways that dropped attackers from lethal heights. Creating portals that bisected enemies, cutting them in half with the closing gateway edges. Using dimensional magic as a weapon with precision that shouldn’t have been possible for a five-year-old.
Both of them were protecting Ollie, who was in the center of their defensive perimeter with a cluster of other elementary students. Ollie didn’t have the tactical abilities his brothers possessed, but he was keeping the other kids calm, organized, making sure they followed Riley’s instructions
They were holding their own.
But they were also getting overwhelmed.

Chapter 490
‘Shawn! Riley’s voice carried across the courtyard. He’d spotted us. ‘Northeast corner, twelve attackers, they’re trying to flank!
I looked where he indicated and saw the group of nightwalkers attempting to circle around the defenders.
I hit them with a sustained plasma blast that vaporized the entire group.
“Thanks! Riley called. Then, to Lake: ‘Portal behind us, now!”
Lake opened a portal just as a group of fae materialized from nowhere. The fae fell through the gateway and-based on the way Lake closed it immediately-probably fell somewhere very far away and very unpleasant.
“We need to get to them! I shouted to my group.
“There’s too many! Chase protested. “We’ll never make it through!”
“Watch me,” I said.
I channeled every bit of plasma energy I could generate and released it in a wave.
The blast radiated outward in a semi-circle, vaporizing everything in a thirty-foot arc in front of us. Attackers simply ceased to exist, reduced to nothing
by the sheer intensity of the energy.
For a moment, there was a clear path to the elementary building.
“Run!” I commanded.
We ran.
My classmates, the Underground members, Professor Morrison-all of us sprinting across the courtyard while I continued firing plasma blasts at anything that tried to intercept us.
We reached Riley and Lake’s defensive position, and I immediately positioned myself on their flank, adding my offensive capabilities to their defensive
coordination.
‘Status?’ I asked Riley.
‘Seventy-three attackers eliminated, Riley reported with disturbing calm for a five-year-old in active combat. Approximately forty-two remaining in immediate vicinity. Additional forces approaching from the west. We’ve evacuated one hundred and seventeen students through Lake’s portals. Casualties- his voice caught slightly, -three adults confirmed dead, five critically wounded.”
Three dead. Teachers or security, people who’d been protecting children.
I felt my plasma abilities surge with renewed fury,
“Where do you need me?’ I asked.
