Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 491

Chapter 491

SHAWN

I heard someone behind me say ‘holy fuck with genuine religious awe.

“Language, Professor Morrison said again, but without much conviction this time.

“Shawn, you okay?” Lake asked, appearing beside me with concern on his five-year-old face.

“I’m fine,” I said, though I was definitely feeling that blast. Not fatigue exactly, but awareness that I’d used a significant amount of

power.

“You’re amazing, Ollie said, his eyes wide. “That was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.”

“We’re still under attack, Riley reminded everyone. “Eastern forces regrouping. Northern perimeter showing signs of organized

assault. We need to consolidate defenses.”

He was right. The massive plasma blast had eliminated one threat but there were still plenty of Jerome’s forces active on the school

grounds.

“Lake, can you portal everyone to safety?” I asked.

“Not everyone at once,” Lake said. “My portals have size limits. And I need to be able to clearly visualize the destination or have been

there before.”

“Where have you been sending the elementary students?” I asked,

“Pack house,” Lake said. ‘Grandma and Grandpa are there organizing reception. But that’s getting crowded now.”

“What about Zade’s territory?” I suggested. “Through the permanent portal at our house?”

“That could work, Lake agreed. ‘But I’d need to make multiple trips. Takes time.”

“Then we buy you time,” I said, turning to the assembled group. My chemistry classmates, the Underground members, pack security

that had gathered around our defensive position. Lake needs time to evacuate everyone. We hold this position and keep the attackers

away from the children. Can we do that?”

‘Hell yes, Nathan said, his partial werewolf form making him look properly fierce.

“Absolutely,” Kamal agreed, her witch magic already building for another assault.

Even the alpha bullies who’d harassed me on my first day nodded agreement. Fear had apparently created temporary unity

‘Riley, I said, ‘you’re tactical command. Tell us where to position, what’s coming, how to counter it. We follose your lead.”

Riley looked at me with something like gratitude in his eyes. He was used to adults dismissing his abilities because of his age. Having someone explicitly defer to his tactical expertise seemed to matter.

‘Defensive perimeter, Riley said immediately, falling into commander mode. “Shawn, you’re our artillery. Position center-back, maximum range, take out anything that gets close, Nathan, Izzy, you’re close combat-front line, physical interception. Kamsi, Daniela, Alex-magical support, shields and disorientation effects. Marcus, coordinate communication between positions using your sound abilities.”

He kept issuing instructions with the kind of clarity and confidence that most military officers would envy. Everyone moved to follow his directions without hesitation.

Because in this moment, it didn’t matter that Riley was five years old. He was clearly the most qualified person to coordinate our

defense.

Incoming, Riley announced. ‘Northeast, forty-five seconds. Mixed force-nightwalkers, werewolves, three fae with offensive magic

capabilities.

I see them, I confirmed, my enhanced vision picking up the approaching group.

“Wait for optimal range, Riley instructed. ‘Let them bunch up. Single blast is more efficient than multiple small ones.”

I held my fire, watching the attackers close distance. Thirty seconds. Twenty. Ten.

“Now, Riley said.

I released a concentrated plasma blast that took out the entire group. The fae never even got their spells off.

“Western approach, Riley continued. “Twenty seconds. Smaller group but they’re faster. Nightwalkers with enhanced speed

modifications.”

‘On it,’ I said.

The pattern continued. Riley would identify threats with his precognition, I’d eliminate them with plasma blasts before they could reach our defensive perimeter. Behind us, Lake was opening portals and evacuating students in small groups-five or six at a time, just

enough to be manageable.

The chemistry class students had largely stopped being useless and were actually helping. Professor Morrison was coordinating with

pack security. The alpha bullies were carrying wounded to Lake’s evacuation portals. Others were distributing weapons and supplies that

someone had retrieved from the security office.

We were functioning as a unit. An improvised, desperate, barely-holding-together unit, but functional nonetheless.

“How many have we evacuated?” I asked during a brief lull in the attacks.

“Two hundred and forty-seven,” Lake reported, breathing hard from the effort of maintaining so many sequential portals. “Mostly

elementary students. Some middle school. We’re getting through it.”

“How much longer can you keep this up?” I asked.

‘As long as I need to,” Lake said with determination that sounded eerily similar to his father’s.
