Chapter 56
XENOIS
“Ollie,” I said carefully, thinking of what to say that wouldn’t put my parents in a bad light in his eyes.
“Grandma and Grandpa love our whole family. Sometimes adults have complicated feelings about things that happened between some people but that
doesn’t mean-
I don’t want to go.” His voice was suddenly stronger, more determined as he shook his head adamantly and gripped on tight to his cutleries as he added.
with puppy eyes.
“Please, Daddy. Can’t we just stay home and watch cartoons instead?”
I looked at my son’s pleading face and felt torn apart. Part of me wanted to give in, to spare him the discomfort of experiencing whatever hostility my parents might show toward his mother. But another part of me knew that canceling would only make things worse in the long run and my mum wasn’t
someone that liked when things didn’t go her way.
“I’m sorry, Ollie, but we have to go to the house for the dinner. It’s already been planned, and it would be rude to cancel now and we wouldn’t want to hurt Grandpa and Grandma feelings.” I reached over and ruffled his hair slowly as I added it as a negotiation.
“But I promise we won’t stay too late, okay? And maybe afterward we can stop for ice cream on the way home.”
Ollie sighed dramatically but nodded his head after thinking about it hard.
“Okay. But I’m bringing my tablet.”
Fair enough.” I said nodding my head. It was better than nothing at this point.
My phone buzzed on the counter, and I glanced at it. Sophia’s name appeared on the screen, and I felt my stomach fill with dread.
Not now. Not with Lumina sitting right there and Ollie still thinking about the hostility that he had picked up on at my parents’ house.
I let it go to voicemail, focusing on my breakfast.
“Who was that?” Lumina asked, though her tone suggested she already knew who it was and was asking for mere formalities.
“Nobody important, I took another sip of coffee, avoiding her eyes.
The phone rang again almost immediately. Same number.
“Answer it,” Lumina said quietly. “We both know you’re going to anyway.”
I looked at her, surprised by the resignation in her voice. She was right, though. If I didn’t answer now, I’d just spend the rest of the morning wondering
what Sophia wanted.
“Excuse me,” I said, to her picking up the phone and stepping into the living room for some semblance of privacy.
‘Hello?”

“Xenois? Thank goodness you answered.” Sophia’s voice was soft and sounding quite breathless on the phone. “I was starting to worry that something was wrong when you didn’t pick up the first time.”
Sorry, I was having breakfast with my family. What can I do for you?” I said glancing at the dinning table as I saw Lumina talking with Ollie who
seemed to be smiling about something.
“I hope I’m not bothering you. I just… I had a really rough night. The pain in my hand was too much and it kept waking me up, and when I did sleep, I had these awful nightmares that kept on showing me what happened.”
She paused, and I could hear her take a shaky breath as she exhaled and said,
I was wondering if you might be free to come over for a little while? I could really use the company. And Riley’s been asking about you as well.”
I closed my eyes, feeling the familiar tug of guilt and responsibility that was present in my stomach.. she had been traumatized by my wife. The fair thing was to go check up on her and make sure that she was okay.
But I also knew what Lumina would think if I left now to go comfort another woman. Especially after the conversation we had last night.
“Sophia, I’m sorry, but I can’t today. We have a family commitment tonight – dinner at my parents’ house. I need to spend the day with Ollie and Lumina, maybe try to work through some of what happened yesterday.”
