Chapter 57
first.”
“Oh.” The disappointment in her voice was present as she cleared her throat before continuing in a distant tone. “Of course. I understand. Family comes
‘It’s not that-
“No, really, it’s fine. I shouldn’t have called. It’s just that this morning when I was changing the bandages, seeing how bad the burn really is…” Her voice broke slightly as she started sounding like she was in tears. “I keep thinking about how it happened, you know? The look in her eyes. I’ve never seen hatred
like that before.”
Guilt twisted in my stomach. “Sophia-”
“I’m sorry. I don’t want to put you in the middle of anything. I know this situation is complicated enough without me adding to it.” She sighed softly as
she kept quiet for a few moments as she seemed to be thinking about something before she added.
“Maybe it would be better if Riley and I just kept our distance for a while. Until things settle down.”
“No.” The word came out forcefully than I had intended as I clenched the phone tight, gritting my teeth as I felt an unexplainable need to make sure
that Sophia was doing alright, like a compulsion.
‘Don’t do that. Don’t let what happened drive you away.”
“But if my being here is causing problems in your marriage-”
“My marriage problems aren’t your fault.” I said as I glanced back toward the kitchen, where I could see Lumina helping Ollie clean up his breakfast
dishes.
They were already done with breakfast.
“What Lumina did yesterday was wrong, regardless of the circumstances. You don’t deserve to be punished for her actions.”
“Thank you for saying that. It means a lot.” Her voice warmed slightly. “I just wish… I wish things could be different. Simpler.”
*So do I.”
There was silence for a while as I could hear the unspoken words that she was not saying at the moment. About if things had been different. If we had a
choice to pick who we wanted.
‘I should let you go,” she said finally, clearing her throat.
“Enjoy your family dinner.”
“Sophia?”
“Yes?”
“Take care of that hand, okay? If it gets worse, don’t hesitate to go back to the doctor,”
“I will. Thank you, Xenois. For everything.”

After she hung up, I stood in the living room for a moment, staring at my phone. Every instinct I had in me was telling me to go to her but the rational thought in my head reminded me that doing so would only make things worse with Lumina and that was bad for my marriage.
“Everything okay?” Lumina’s voice startled me as I didn’t hear her coming at all. I turned around to see her. She was standing in the doorway, watching me with an unreadable expression on her face.
“Fine. She just wanted to check in about her hand.”
“And did she ask you to come over?”
I hesitated, and that was answer enough.
“But you said no,” she continued, sounding surprised as well that I had denied Sophia’s request. Was she really that confident that I would go once
Sophia asked.
“Of course I said no. We have plans today.”
She studied my face for a long moment. “You wanted to say yes, though.”
It wasn’t a question, and I couldn’t bring myself to lie to her. “Part of me did, yes. She’s hurting, and I feel responsible.”
‘Because of what I did.”
“Because of what happened in our house, yes.”
Lumina nodded slowly, processing this as she searched my face for answers before she shrugged her shoulders. “Thank you. For staying.”
“Lumina-
“I know you didn’t do it for me,” she said quietly. “You did it because it was the right thing to do. But thank you anyway.”
Before I could respond, she turned and walked back toward the kitchen, leaving me alone.
