Chapter 89
XENOIS

I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my messages, and there it was a text from Sophia sent about an hour ago: “Riley is nervous about his first day. Would you consider coming to the school for moral support? It would mean so much to him.”
The message was there, but I had no memory of reading it or deciding to come to the school. In fact, I couldn’t remember what had prompted me to leave work early and drive over here.
“I…” I started, then stopped. The confusion in my head was getting worse, like there was something important I was trying to
remember but couldn’t quite grasp.
“You what?” Thorne pressed on, using my hesitance to his advantage.”You just happened to show up at the exact moment your mate was having a confrontation with the woman you’ve been spending way too much time with?”
Before I could answer, Sophia had gotten to her feet, her face red with anger and embarrassment. “I don’t have to listen to this,” she said, brushing dirt off her clothes, before glaring at Thorne. “I don’t have to stand here and be attacked by someone who doesn’t even
know me.”
“You’re right,” Thorne said calmly, unaffected by her anger as he continued speaking. “You don’t have to stand here. You can leave. In fact, I suggest you do exactly that.”
“I wasn’t talking to you,” Sophia snapped, then turned to look at me with those sad, pitiful eyes that always made my chest tight. “Xenois, are you going to let him treat me like this? After everything we’ve been through?”
The plea in her voice, made me want to step forward and shield her from Thorne’s hostility because she was too fragile for it. But something in my friend’s expression stopped me.
“Everything you’ve been through?” Thorne repeated, keeping his voice quiet as he gritted his teeth angrily.
“What exactly have you been through, Sophia? Because last I checked, you disappeared for six years and just showed up again a few
weeks ago.”
“We have history,” she said, lifting her chin in disdain as she kept going. “We care about each other. That’s not going to change just because you disapprove of our present.”
“History,” Thorne nodded slowly. “Right. The kind of history that makes a man forget his responsibilities to his mate and child.”
Sophia gasped at that as she drew back her hand and tried to slap Thorne.
But Thorne was faster than she was. He caught her wrist easily, his grip tight enough to make her wince.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” he said. “I may have rules about not hitting women, but if you assault me, I’ll make an exception.”

Chapter 89
“Let go of me,” Sophia hissed, trying to pull away from him.

“Gladly,” Thorne said, but instead of releasing her, he twisted her arm behind her back in a move that was clearly painful but not damaging in the long run as he added. “But first, you’re going to listen to me very carefully.”
“Thorne, that’s enough,” I said, stepping forward, something forcing me to comfort her and put Thorne in his place. I swallowed hard as I added, looking at him.”You’re hurting her.”
“I’m protecting you,” he replied without looking at me, his eyes focused on Sophia as he went on.
“Because apparently, you’re not capable of protecting yourself.”
He leaned closer to Sophia, his voice dropping so low that I could barely hear him.
“I don’t know what game you’re playing, but it ends now, Sophia. This is a warning, and your first chance to back away from this man. He’s not yours anymore. Grow up. Stay away from Xenois. Stay away from his family. And if I catch you manipulating him again, I’ll make
sure you regret it.”
He released her arm and stepped back, leaving Sophia rubbing her wrist and glaring at him with hatred apparent on her expression.
“You have no right,” she said, her voice shaking with rage. “No right to threaten me or to interfere in my relationship with Xenois.”
“Your relationship?” Thorne laughed humorlessly.
“You mean the relationship where he’s married to someone else? Where he has a child with someone else? Where he’s built a life with
someone else?”
“That’s not-” Sophia started, but Thorne cut her off.
“That’s exactly what it is,” he said firmly. “And if you had any decency, any respect for what he’s built, you’d walk away.”
I could see people starting to gather around us, as they were obviously drawn by the loud noises coming from us and obvious tension. Some of them had their phones out, and I realized with horror that they were recording.
“Thorne,” I said urgently, “we need to get out of here. People are watching.”
“Oh, now you’re worried about appearances?” But he followed my eyes and saw the small crowd that had formed. “You’re right. We
need to handle this.”
He turned to the onlookers, his voice carrying the authority of a Beta addressing pack members. “Delete those recordings. Now. And forget what you saw here. This is a private family matter that doesn’t concern anyone else.”
I felt the Alpha command build in my chest and released it alongside his words, repeating his words as both commands were able to completely compel even the supernatural beings and not only the mere humans who were naturally weaker.

Their eyes went glassy for a moment, and I watched as they deleted the videos and began to leave, their attention already shifting to
other things.
“Alpha Xenois!” one of the remaining women called out cheerfully, as if she was just noticing my presence as she said. “How
wonderful to see you supporting your son on his first day. You and Lumina must be so proud.”
“Such a devoted father,” another woman agreed. “Ollie is lucky to have such caring parents.”
The irony of their words, spoken just moments after I’d been kissing another woman in front of them, made my stomach turn with
nausea.
These people saw me as a devoted husband and father, but I’d just betrayed everything they believed about me.
“Come on,” Thorne said, grabbing my arm. “We need to talk. Now.”
He began pulling me toward the parking lot, his grip firm enough that I didn’t have much choice but to follow him. He wasn’t letting go of me because he couldn’t trust me not to go back to Sophia.
Behind us, I could hear Sophia calling my name, but I didn’t turn around.
As we walked away, I caught some bits of conversation from the crowd that was leaving in different directions.
“…such a good Alpha…”
“…Lumina is so lucky…”
“…what a beautiful family they have…”
Each comment felt like a knife stab to my chest as I tried not to break down in guilt.
“My car,” I said weakly, gesturing toward where I’d parked.
“We’ll come back for it later,” Thorne said shaking his head as he added. “Right now, we need to get you somewhere private where we can figure out what the hell just happened to you.”
