Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 88

Chapter 88

XENOIS

The moment Thorne’s voice broke through the moment that I was having with Sophia, I felt like I’d been poured with ice water. The fog that had been clouding my mind for the past several minutes began to leave, and suddenly I had full control of my senses.

I was standing in front of my son’s school, holding another woman while my mate had just driven away in tears, after I had not

picked her side and chose another woman over her.

The woman I was holding had just kissed me, and I had – God help me

kissed her back.

What the hell was wrong with me?

I felt a rush of relief flowing through me when I saw Thorne’s familiar face, even though part of me was furious at the tone that he

used iin his voice.

He was looking at me like I was a stranger, like I had done something so unexpected of me that he couldn’t process it.

“Thorne,” I said again, my voice sounding more steady now that some of the strange fog had cleared out of my system. “I can explain.”

“Can you?” His dark eyes were filled with disappointment and anger. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you just publicly kissed another woman while your mate drove away crying.”

“It’s not what it looks like,” Sophia interrupted, stepping closer to me as if seeking protection from Throne as she continued speaking. “Lumina attacked me. She slapped me twice, unprovoked. Xenois was just trying to comfort me.”

“Comfort you?” Thorne’s voice rose slightly, and I saw several people near the school entrance looking at us, murmuring amongst themselves as Thorne’s voice drew me back to the ongoing argument. “That’s what you call comfort?”

I felt my cheeks turn red out of embarrassment. There was no way to explain away what had just happened, no way to make it look

I had betrayed my mate. like anything other than what it was

“Thorne, please,” I started, but he cut me off with a glare that could have melted steel.

“Don’t,” he said firmly. “Don’t try to justify this to me. I’ve been your friend for fifteen years, Xenois. I’ve watched you build a life with Lumina, watched you become a father, watched you grow into the kind of man and Alpha this pack needs. And now you’re throwing it all away for what? A moment of nostalgia?”

His words hit me in the gut like physical blows as I felt myself take a step or two back out of guilt and shame. Everything he was saying was true, he hadn’t lied about a single thing, I had been building a life with Lumina, had been becoming the man I wanted to be. So why did I feel so confused, so torn between my loyalty to my mate and this overwhelming need to protect and comfort Sophia?

“You don’t understand,” I said, my voice strained, as I could feel my head becoming heavier as I continued speaking. “Lumina has been

different lately. Distant. Aggressive. She attacked Sophia without any reason.”

“And that justifies kissing another woman in public?” Thorne’s voice was calm, it was the kind of tone he used when he was truly

angry.

“That justifies humiliating your mate in front of your son’s school?”

Before I could answer, Sophia stepped forward, her voice taking on that shaky, scared tone that made me want to shield her from harm from everyone who might pose a threat to her.

“I never meant for any of this to happen,” she said, tears rolling down her face as she tried to dry it with her handkerchief. “I was just trying to talk to Lumina, to make peace. But she got so angry, so violent. I was scared, and Xenois was just trying to help me.”

Thorne’s expression didn’t soften even slightly, seeing it If anything, his eyes grew colder as he looked at her.

“Funny how trouble seems to follow you wherever you go,” he said, his voice carrying hostility in it that made me want to step between them to prevent a physical altercation. Thorne never hits women but that doesn’t mean Sophia won’t be his first.

“First at the family dinner, now here. Makes a man wonder if you’re really the innocent victim you claim to be.” Throne spat out, his

tone filled with disgust.

“That’s enough,” I said, my protective instincts getting the best of me as I faced Thorne, feeling angry as well. “Whatever happened between Lumina and Sophia, there’s no excuse for you to attack her character.”

“Attack her character?” Thorne laughed, but there was no humor in it as he looked like he had heard something incredulous.

“Xenois, wake up. Look at what’s happening here. Really look.”

But before I could process what he meant, Thorne reached out and grabbed Sophia’s arm roughly as Sophia gasped, trying to pull away from his grip.

“I think you need to leave,” he said firmly. “Now.”

“Don’t touch me!” Sophia yanked her arm away from him and stumbled backward, nearly falling as she managed to steady myself and

continued speaking.

“You have no right to manhandle me!”

“And you have no right to destroy someone’s marriage,” Thorne shot back, angrily. “But here we are.”

I watched in horror as Sophia hit the ground, her designer clothes getting dirty as she looked astonished. Had Thorne pushed her or was it out of imbalance. Every instinct I had screamed at me to help her, to protect her from Thorne’s aggression.

“Thorne, what the hell?” I moved toward Sophia, but he stepped directly into my path.
