After my sudden outburst, I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself enough to think clearly and figure out what I was going to do next. Andy knew most of my plan, but not all of it because I believed that there was no one to be trusted in this life aside from me. There

were some details I’d kept to myself, some truths I never told anyone.

“Riley,” I said finally as I realized that Andy needed the full picture for her to see why this was very important to me and why I

couldn’t wait anymore.

“Riley is Xenois’s son. I took him from the hospital the night Lumina gave birth to twins. She was hemorrhaging, unconscious, and in all the chaos, no one noticed when I walked out with one of the babies.”

“Jesus Christ, Sophia.” Andy’s voice was low and filled with disbelief. “You kidnapped a child?”

“I liberated him,” I corrected smugly rolling my eyes as I continued speaking.

“I saved him from growing up with a mother who didn’t deserve him and gave him to someone who would love him properly. I’ve been raising him as my own for six years, waiting for the perfect time to come back and claim my rightful place in this family.”

“And Lumina has no idea she had twins?”

“None. The medical records were altered – I have connections in the hospital, people who owed me favors and people who knew how to get the job done. Right from the start, they lied to Lumina even before the delivery date and told her it was just one big baby. As far as anyone knows, she gave birth to one healthy baby boy. Ollie.”

“This is insane, even for you.” Andy’s voice was strained as she seemed to be thinking about how all this fit the puzzle that I had been giving her over the years. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? The magical consequences alone-”

“I know exactly what I’ve done,” I interrupted her calmly as I continued. “I’ve put myself perfectly in place to take everything that should have been mine from the beginning, everything that I had lost. Xenois was supposed to be my mate, not hers. We were together first, we were in love first. She stole him from me, and I’m just taking back what’s rightfully mine.”

“The mate bond doesn’t work that way, and you know it. You can’t force-”

“Watch me.” I sank onto my couch, suddenly exhausted. “I already killed Marcus for this plan. My actual mate, the one the universe chose for me. I slit his throat in his sleep because he was in the way of what I wanted, two years ago to make time to mourn him and then prepare to make my way back to silver Creek. Before then I made sure that Xena, Xenois sister’s death was on Lumina. I planted it on her although she got away with bail. Saying the results was inconsistent, So don’t tell me about the true nature of the mate bond, Andy. I’ve already crossed that line.”

The silence stretched between us, as Andy seemed to be processing what I had told her. I’d never told anyone about Marcus, about what I’d done to him before leaving town months ago. But I was past the point of caring about secrets now.

“Sophia, Andy said finally, her voice shaking slightly. “What you’re describing… the magical backlash alone should have destroyed you. Killing your mate, kidnapping a child, trying to break up a true mated pair… how are you even still alive?”

“Because I’m stronger than you think,” I said stubbornly stating at my manicured nails. “And because I’m willing to pay any price to

get what I want.”
