Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 98

Chapter 98

29

“Every spell has a price. Every magical act requires a balance to make it equal. You can’t just take and take without giving something

back.”

“I’m giving plenty back,” I snapped. “I’ve sacrificed my entire life for this plan. I’ve spent six years in another pack, living with people that hated me because I didn’t come from a big background, I was also stuck, raising someone else’s child trying to play it off as Marcus own, while, waiting for the perfect moment to return. I’ve earned this.”

“The necklace,” Andy said, as she switched the conversation back to safer ground. “Tell me exactly how Xenois has been wearing it.”

“Every day since I gave it to him. But I also gave it to him under the impression that it came from Lumina. He touches it constantly, especially when he’s stressed or confused. It should be working by now. His feelings for her should be transferring to me gradually, but instead he’s still completely devoted to her.”

“True mate bonds are incredibly strong,” Andy said thoughtfully. “It’s possible that the spell is working, but it’s being overwhelmed by the natural connection between them. I could strengthen it, add a compulsion element that would make him want to please you, to make

you happy.”

“Do it,” I said immediately. “Whatever it takes.”

“There’s something else,” Andy continued. “You asked me for a magic siphon which I gave you. But what exactly are you trying to

siphon?”

I hesitated, then decided I’d already revealed too much to stop now. “Ollie’s life force. The kid is incredibly gifted, more than his parents realize. I’ve been trying to transfer some of his abilities to Riley, to make him stronger, more appealing to Xenois.”

“And it’s not working?”

“Riley shook his hand during that playdate, just like I instructed him. He was supposed to create a connection that would allow the siphon to work. But nothing happened. In fact, I got my hand burned for my trouble when Lumina decided to go batshit crazy and press

my hand to the stove.”

“That’s… unusual,” Andy said slowly. “A siphon spell like that should have worked immediately upon physical contact. The kid ought to feel dizzy like a minor tiredness and over time get weaker and weaker getting a lot of illness and treating it so people would not trace it back to being a magical problem. The only way it wouldn’t work is if the target has been somehow protected or fortified against magical attacks before you tried to siphon his life force.”

“That’s impossible,” I said firmly. “Lumina doesn’t know anything about magic. She’s completely ordinary, completely powerless. There’s no way she could have protected Ollie from something she doesn’t even know exists.”

“What about Xenois? Could he have-”

“No. He’s never shown any interest in magic. Neither of them has any idea what I’m capable of.”

“Then how do you explain the failed siphon?”

“Riley lied to me,” I said finally after thinking it through “He told me he’d made the connection with Ollie, but he must have been lying to avoid punishment. He’s gotten too comfortable, and daring every day that passes. He needs to be reminded of his place.”

“Sophia, be careful with the child. He’s been through enough-

“He’s been through exactly what he needed to go through to become useful to me,” I interrupted. “And tomorrow, when he comes

home, he’s going to learn that defying me has consequences.”

“Don’t do anything rash. If you hurt him too badly, if someone notices-”

“No one will notice. They never do. Riley knows how to hide bruises, how to make excuses. I’ve trained him well.”
