“By the way, Alina,” Madeline suddenly lowered her voice. I heard your family’s new daughter also got into our school. Aren’t you supposed to stick with her?”
Alina’s smile dropped slightly.
Noelle raised an eyebrow. “The Guzmans‘ new daughter?”
“You didn’t know? Alina has a little sis-”
“It’s nothing,” Alina cut Madeline off. “Don’t worry about her. She’s got people helping. She doesn’t need me.”
Madeline didn’t like Viola either. She’d met Viola once and just couldn’t warm up to her. Noelle had way more of her vibe.
She bounced back into conversation, hopping from topic to topic, and the subject died down.
Meanwhile, Viola was elsewhere.
Since Viola studied finance, she lived in a different dorm from Noelle.
Mary called her. “Charlotte, why wouldn’t you let us come for your first day? I told your cousins to drop you off, but you refused. Can you really handle this on your own?”
“Relax, Mom. I’ve got it covered.” Viola sat back, calm and easy, watching her roommates make her bed.
Money made everything easier. She’d gifted each of them designer bags, and they were practically tripping over themselves to help.
“Viola, is that skincare a limited edition? It looks amazing!” One roommate gushed with eyes full of envy.
Viola took in the attention, but she stayed casual. “Yeah. Mom got it. She said girls should use the good stuff.”
Into the phone, she added, “Really, Mom. I’m fine by myself.”
There was no way she could let the Guzmans bring her to campus. Noelle was also here. If they saw Noelle, everything would blow
Jp.
‘What about your sister? Isn’t she there too? Why didn’t she come with you?” Mary asked again.
‘Alina?” Viola’s eyes shifted, and her voice had a mix of grievance and carefulness. “No idea where she went. Maybe meeting riends. So she couldn’t keep an eye on me. It’s fine, Mom. I can handle this. I don’t want to bother her. She’s probably got her own stuff to deal with.”
Her back–and–forth tone worked perfectly. Mary frowned on the other end.
‘What could matter more than your first day? Alina is being so inconsideratel” Mary’s voice brimmed with sharp displeasure. ‘Okay, Charlotte, take care of yourself. I’ll call your sister.”
‘Mom, don’t get mad at her,” Viola said, almost pleading, but a tiny smirk tugged at her lips.
‘Relax. I know what I’m doing.” Mary hung up.

Chapter 229 Scolding
Almost right after the call ended, Alina’s phone screamed across the dining table.
Seeing “Mom” flash on the screen made her smile freeze.
She took a breath and answered. The second it connected, Mary’s sharp, furious voice hit her.
“Alina! Where are you right now?!”
Alina frowned, but she kept her voice calm. “Eating with friends.”

“Eating? Your sister is on her first day, alone in her dorm getting settled, and you’re just having a nice meal? Are you even acting like a big sister?!” Mary’s voice was full of anger.
