“Dex, Dex, drive smoother. Don’t wake up Mr. Angus!” Sin leaned close to Dex and said considerately.

If Sin hadn’t said anything, it would have been fine. But the moment he spoke, Dex’s hand on the wheel twitched on reflex.
Just then, they hit a steep bump. The car jolted hard, and Angus woke up instantly.
“What’s going on? Are we there?!” Angus asked.
Sebastian shot them a cold glance.
Dex and Sin were lost for words.
At the same time, at the Guzman Residence.
The spacious, bright kitchen smelled amazing.
Mary was standing by the stove, slowly simmering a pot of soup.
She wore an apron, her face full of hope but also a little nervous. Every now and then, she stirred the soup, tasted it, and carefully adjusted the heat.
She wasn’t actually very good at cooking, and in these years she hardly ever made meals herself. But today, after Noelle finished filming her show, she really wanted to do something nice.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed on the counter.
Mary wiped her hands and picked it up. Seeing “Charlotte” on the screen, she instinctively looked around, then pressed the answer button and lowered her voice. “What’s wrong?”
On the other end, Viola’s soft, slightly whiny voice came through, mixed with a few suppressed coughs. “Mom… I think I have a fever. My head is spinning. Being alone in the house is so uncomfortable… I miss you… Can you come keep me company?”
Mary glanced at the pot of soup bubbling on the stove–she’d made it especially for Noelle.
She took a deep breath, her tone unusually firm: “Not today. Noey will be back after filming, and I need to stay home with her.”
Viola’s voice quivered with tears. “But Mom, I really feel awful. Can’t you come even for a little while? I’m alone, and I’m really
scared…”
In the past, hearing this, Mary’s heart would trave melted immediately.
But right now, she couldn’t help thinking of Noelle her face reminded Mary a little of herself, but she was always calm and distant
Maybe it was because she hadn’t seen Noelle for a few days, but she missed her and even felt some guilt toward her
Her biological daughter had been back for so long, yet because of her own emotional blocks and uncertainty about how to relate, their mother–daughter bond had always had a layer of distance.
She couldn’t keep hurting and ignoring her real daughter just because of Viola anymore.

“There are staff and a doctor in the house. Whatever you need, ask them. I really can’t come today. Be good and rest,” Mary said firmly, leaving no room for argument.
Viola was silent for two seconds, then her voice dropped, sounding almost self–mocking. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I’m asking too much. How could I expect you to leave Noelle to come see me? After all, Noelle is your real daughter. What am I? I’m just a fake… a fake you keep hidden in the house.”
Mary felt a pang and grew a little frustrated. “That’s not what I meant. But today is the first time Noey is home after filming her show, and I…”
“Enough! I get it! You don’t have to say anything!” Viola interrupted through her tears, then hung up.
Listening to the busy signal, Mary stood in the kitchen, holding her phone, feeling a swirl of emotions.
On one hand, she really wanted to stay and spend time with Noelle. She’d been in the countryside for several days, probably eating and sleeping poorly, and as her mother, of course, Mary should be there for her.
But…
Viola’s crying earlier made her heart ache. That child was alone in the house and is now sick.
Maybe…
Should I go check on her for a moment?
Go and come back quickly?
Get back before Noey gets home?
Mary hesitated, taking off her apron and preparing to head out.
“Mom.”
A calm, steady female voice sounded at the kitchen doorway.
Mary was startled and looked up.
Standing there was Alina, who had somehow come back without her noticing. She leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed, quietly watching Mary. Her eyes were calm, but sharp in a way that was hard to explain.
Mary’s face flickered slightly, as if she felt a little guilty.
Alina walked into the kitchen and shut the door behind her, blocking out the sounds from outside.
