The rain had not stopped. The three of them pushed deeper into the forest.

Water poured from the sky, soaking the trees and the ground. The mountain path was muddy and slippery. Loose rocks and broken branches were scattered everywhere.
Jasper walked behind them with a grim look on his face. He kept muttering under his breath. “This is crazy! Risking our lives for someone who doesn’t even matter! Noey, since when did you become such a saint?”
Noelle ignored him completely. She walked beside Sebastian and spoke with him quietly from time to time.
Sebastian stayed close to her the whole time. His eyes moved across the forest, carefully watching their surroundings.
When they reached a steep slope, Jasper hurried ahead and stepped in front of Noelle. He held out his hand. “Noey, be careful. Let me help you up.”
Noelle did not even look at his hand. Instead, she grabbed the arm Sebastian reached out to her. With his support, she climbed up the slope with ease.
Jasper’s hand froze in the air. His face darkened even more. After a moment, he pulled his hand back awkwardly and climbed up by himself. He grumbled, “Like Sebastian’s stronger than me. You don’t even give me a chance to prove it.”
After a long and difficult search, Noelle finally stopped. In a narrow crack along a shaded cliff, she saw it. A small plant swayed gently in the rain. It gave off a faint, unique fragrance.
The whole plant was bright green. Its thick leaves were glossy with rain. Thin golden lines ran through the veins of the leaves. It was exactly what she had been looking for.
“That’s it!” Noelle’s eyes lit up as she pointed toward the cliff above.
But the location was extremely dangerous. The cliff wall was almost vertical. Wet moss covered the rocks, making them slick and treacherous. Below it was a deep ravine that seemed to go on forever, while rainwater kept washing down the rocks.
“I’ll go,” Sebastian said immediately. Without hesitation, he began checking the safety rope he carried with him.
Jasper quickly spoke up as well. “Right! Sebastian, you go!”
Inside, he secretly prayed that the man might slip and fall. If that happened, he could take Noey away and leave everything behind.
But just as the thought crossed his mind, Noelle’s cold voice cut in. “Jasper. You’re going too.”
“Me?” Jasper blinked in surprise. “Why should I go?”
“Because you owe me.”
Noelle turned around and looked at him calmly, her eyes cold. “Didn’t you keep saying you wanted to make up for what you did? This is your chance.”
Jasper choked on his words. Then a small spark of hope rose in his heart. “If I help, will you forgive me for what happened before?
Noelle looked at him as if he had just told the most ridiculous joke in the world. Her eyes were full of sarcasm, Jasper, do you really think this is the time to bargain?” she said coldly. “If you don’t want to help, then leave. Don’t stand here and get in the

The disgust and determination in her eyes stabbed straight into Jasper’s chest. He clenched his teeth and forced down his anger. “Fine. I’ll go.”
But in his heart, he thought something very different. I’ll go, sure. But that doesn’t mean I have to make sure Sebastian comes back in one piece.
As if she had seen right through him, Noelle added coldly, “If anything happens to Sebastian, I won’t let you off. I mean it.”
Jasper opened his mouth, but no word came out.
The last bit of his spirit collapsed. With no choice left, he followed Sebastian. Together they tied the safety rope to a strong tree at the top of the cliff. Then, one after the other, they began climbing down the wet and slippery cliff wall.
Sebastian moved quickly and agilely. His body was strong and steady.
Jasper was just as fast. In rough terrain like this, his wild instincts and experience even gave him an edge.
The two men soon got close to the herb growing on the cliff.
Sebastian reached out, ready to pick it. Suddenly, the rock under his foot shifted.
Crack! The stone broke loose and rolled away. Sebastian lost his balance and began sliding down the steep cliff.
“Watch out!”
Jasper was slightly below him. Almost by instinct, he reached out and grabbed Sebastian’s arm. With his other hand, he dug his fingers into a crack in the cliff, holding both of them in place.
“Don’t drag me down if you want to die!” Jasper snapped, breathing hard.
Sebastian steadied himself with Jasper’s help. He glanced at him but said nothing. Instead, he adjusted his position and slowly reached for the herb again.
This time, he succeeded. He carefully picked the plant and placed it inside the waterproof pouch he carried.
Then the two men began climbing down slowly.
When they were almost near the ground, the rock under Jasper’s foot suddenly collapsed. The ground gave way beneath him. Jasper lost his footing and fell. “Arghh!”
Below them was a deep drop filled with sharp rocks.
For a moment, Jasper thought he was dead.
