“When I made those promises, you hadn’t insulted Noey,” Lucas said, his voice ice–calm, almost cruel. His eyes were so steady, so unflinching, that Jaylee felt a chill run down her spine. “Jaylee, I gave you a chance. But you went after the people I care about most. You shamed her in front of everyone. What do you think I would possibly give you now?”
Jaylee opened her mouth, but her mind was a blank void.
It took her several long seconds to find her voice again, shrill and raw. “All for her? For that woman? Lucas, are you blind? She’s married–her husband is Sebastian! You’re casting me out for a married woman, and you want to pretend you’re so righteous?”
Something cold flashed in Lucas‘ eyes, but it faded almost instantly into lazy indifference.
“Jaylee,” he said softly, the words like a scalpel, “you still don’t get it. I’m not ending this because of what she said. I’m ending it because of what you did.”
“What did I do? I-”
“You’re vain. You’re always looking for a way up. You use everyone around you as a rung on your ladder.” Lucas didn’t let her finish, his tone final. “When we met, you had fire. You were stubborn. I thought you were different. But what happened?”
He let out a short, joyless laugh. There was no warmth, only disappointment.
“In the end, you’re just like the rest. Maybe worse–stupid enough to play games right in front of me, stupid enough to insult my friends to my face, and still expect me to keep you.”
Color rose in Jaylee’s cheeks, then drained away, leaving her pale. She wanted to shout, to rage, to hurl words back at him–but nothing came out.
Lucas opened the car door and slid inside.
Before he started the engine, he rolled the window down and looked at her one last time.
“Jaylee, the world doesn’t owe you anything. You chose this road. Now walk it on your own.”
The window slid up, silent and absolute.
The black car pulled away, taillights glowing red in the darkness until they vanished into the flow of traffic.
Jaylee stood on the curb, frozen, as if all the life had been drained from her.
Her phone rang.
She answered automatically, pressing it to her ear.
A cold, mechanical voice floated through the line, distant as a ghost:
“Ms. Jaylee, your credit card ending in 3827 has an outstanding balance of 2,034,000 dollars, overdue by three days. Please make payment as soon as possible. Late payment will affect your credit score. The bank reserves the right to pursue legal action…”
The words blurred together, fading into static.
Two million.

That necklace.
The necklace she’d maxed her card out to buy.
And Lucas–he would never pay her bills again.
She was alone now.
There was no way she could pay off that kind of debt.
Jaylee felt all the blood leave her limbs. She went cold, numb to the bone.
It was over.

She was truly finished.
In the end, Lucas did pay off the two million for Jaylee.
It wasn’t out of love. He just didn’t want her to carry that kind of debt for the rest of her life.
If she was shackled to that burden, she’d never stand up again.
After all, he was the one who’d brought her into this world of privilege. He knew what it was to fall from grace, and he hoped she might find a way to live honestly.
That was all he could do for her now.
Late at night…
At the Menzies‘ estate…
Tomorrow would be Theodore’s birthday celebration.
The entire house was decked out in brilliant colors, full of festive cheer.
Everything was ready. Most of the staff had gone to bed.
The whole house was hushed.
Inside Theodore’s room, the old man was busy picking out his own clothes.
The butler had told him Sebastian’s gift was a navy blue jacket.
That would look perfect with a black shirt underneath.
And maybe some velvet trousers.
The butler stood by, amused. “You said you weren’t excited, but here you are, up in the middle of the night to plan your outfit.”
“Are you sure Sebastian bought me the navy blue one?” Theodore asked, turning this way and that before the mirror. “Does this look good? Handsome, right?”
