He couldn’t let the family embarrass itself in front of the city’s elite. He needed everyone to see that he was strong enough to uphold the family legacy. More than anything, Ethan wanted Theodore’s birthday banquet to go off without a single hitch.
“Tomorrow there will be 108 tables. That’s correct.” Ethan nodded as he studied the seating chart. He paused, then pointed to a spot near the edge. “Add two more seats right here.”
His assistant didn’t question him. He simply nodded. “Yes, sir!”
After so many years working for Ethan, he could read these unspoken commands with ease.
Ethan always wore a stern face, but his heart was never as hard as he let on.
Of course, those two seats were for Sebastian and Noelle.
He claimed he didn’t want them at the banquet, but he still made sure there was a place for them.
“All right. Get some rest. We have plenty to take care of tomorrow,” Ethan said quietly.
The assistant nodded and turned to leave.
Suddenly, a cold draft swept through the room.
The door swung open with a bang, thrown wide from outside.
A dark figure filled the doorway.
Behind him, a line of silent shadows stretched into the night, dozens strong, as quiet and ominous as ghosts.
The air grew thick with menace.
Ethan’s pupils narrowed to pinpricks.
In a flash, he was back in the past–twenty years ago, another night just as black.
The same sense of dread. The same faceless mob. The night the Menzies house was drenched in blood.
The next morning…
Theodore’s birthday.
Melrose Manor.
Noelle woke before dawn, carefully wrapping a small box of medicine and tucking it into her purse.
The main ingredient was root of golden resurrection, blended with seven other rare roots. She’d simmered it for two days and nights to make this tiny box–enough to nourish Theodore’s heart and restore his strength.
Sebastian sat nearby, obviously dressed up for the occasion.

He wore a dark suit and had neatly styled his hair. He looked sharper than she’d ever seen.
“Up.” Noelle strode over and snatched his phone. “Get changed. We’re leaving.”
Sebastian glanced up. “It’s still early.”

“It’s not early!” Noelle insisted. “We’ll go early, wish Theodore happy birthday, maybe even have some fun. Lucas said he’d be here at nine. It’s already eight thirty. Come on.”
Sebastian let her pull him along, grumbling. “I’m not going inside. I’ll just walk around the gate and leave.”
The stubbornness ran deep in both grandfather and grandson.
“Fine, walk around the gate,” Noelle said breezily. “Then we can go in and sit for a bit.”
Sebastian gave her a look.
He knew better than to trust her promises.
At eight fifty, Lucas arrived.
He was, for once, dressed to impress. His suit was perfectly tailored, his hair slicked into place. He looked every bit the part.
As soon as he walked in, he spotted Sebastian standing stiffly in the living room.
“Well, Sebastian, don’t you look sharp today.” Lucas gave him a long look up and down. “But you’re scowling like you’re heading to a funeral.”
Sebastian glared at him.
Noelle came down the stairs and cut in, “He spent all night working up the nerve. Now he’s stuck in that mood.”
Lucas laughed. “Come on, it’s not a big deal. You two have been at odds for years. Today’s the day to talk it out. After this, no more awkwardness.”
Sebastian said nothing, but he didn’t argue.
The three of them got in the car.
The drive to the Menzies estate was quiet.
Sebastian barely spoke.
Noelle watched the scenery flash by, then suddenly turned to Lucas. “Did you really pay off Jaylee’s two million?”
Lucas, scrolling through his phone, paused and then grunted, “Yeah.”
“Why?” Noelle pressed. “You don’t owe her anything.”
Lucas was silent for a moment. “No, I don’t. But she only ended up in that mess because of me.”
Noelle arched a brow.
He tucked his phone away, leaning back in his seat. His tone was lazy, but something serious flickered in his eyes. “It’s hard to fall

from luxury. That debt was for a necklace—one she bought because of me. In the end, I was the one who brought her into this world.”
He turned to the window. “Now that I’ve paid off her debt, whatever she does next is up to her. It’s not my business anymore.”
Noelle just watched him in silence.
Sebastian met Lucas’s eyes in the rearview mirror, but said nothing either.
The car rolled on.
Half an hour later, they pulled up in front of the Menzies‘ estate.
The three of them got out and walked toward the main gate.
After a few steps, Noelle slowed.
Sebastian and Lucas halted as well.
The Menzies‘ front gate was shut tight.
There were no servants to greet them, no red carpet, no guests streaming in or out.
The entire manor was eerily silent, as if the world itself were holding its breath.
Decor hung over the door, but in the bright afternoon sun, their color looked harsh, jarring–white as tombstones.
“What’s going on?” Lucas frowned. “Isn’t the banquet today? This doesn’t feel right…”
He trailed off, but unease was written on all their faces.
Sebastian’s expression turned grim. He strode forward and shoved the door.
It swung open with a heavy groan.
Inside, the silence was suffocating.
The decorations were all in place–red carpets, bulbs in the trees, festive tents lined up in perfect rows.
But not a single person was there.
