Chapter 472 I Refuse
Noelle waited in silence, letting Mary vent.
When Mary finally stopped, Noelle spoke–her voice even, calm, and quietly powerful. “Are you finished?”
Mary blinked, caught off guard.

“Then it’s my turn,” Noelle said. Her tone was steady, but there was a steel in it that brooked no argument. “Sebastian is my husband. We’re married. We face everything together. I’m not leaving.”
“You-”
Noelle cut her off. “As for the Guzmans–my marriage to Sebastian will never bring trouble to your family. If you’re that worried, I’ll sever my ties with all of you right now. Whatever happens to me after that is my own business.”
Mary’s face flushed crimson. “How can you be so ungrateful?”
Noelle didn’t answer her. She turned instead to Angus, her uncles, and her cousins.
“What about the rest of you?” she asked softly. “Do you all feel the same?”
Angus gave a weary sigh and stepped forward, resting a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Noey, I won’t force you. Whatever you decide, we stand with you.”
All her uncles nodded, their voices firm.
Brian said, “You’re family. Whatever happens, we stand together.”
Kenny added, “The family might not be what it once were, but we still have some strength. Your grandfather’s old friends are everywhere. If you need help finding someone, just say so.”
Lance nodded. “He’s right. Don’t try to carry this alone.”
Her cousins crowded in, their voices overlapping.
“Just say the word, Noelle!”
“We’re with you, all the way!”
“Anyone tries to hurt you, they’ll have to deal with me first!”
“We’re staying right here. Let’s see who dares touch you with us around!”
Noelle looked at their earnest faces, her throat tight, her eyes stinging.
She blinked hard, swallowed the lump in her throat, and nodded. “Thank you,” she whispered.
Mary stood off to the side, stamping her foot in outrage. “Fine! You’re all angels, I’m the villain! Do whatever you want, I’m done!”
She stormed off, but after a few steps, she whirled and called back, “Just don’t come crying to me when you get hurt!”
Then she left again.

Noelle watched her go, then turned to Angus and the family. “Come in. There’s a lot to explain. Let’s talk inside.”
Angus nodded and led the family indoors.
In the living room, Noelle told them everything–about the massacre twenty years ago, the attack last night, Theodore’s disappearance, and the fruitless search.
Angus was silent for a long time after hearing it all.
“Those people…” he said slowly, “they’re after the Menzies. Now that you’re with Sebastian, you’re in their sights too.”
Noelle nodded, calm and resolute.

“Then we will not stand by,” Angus declared, rising and thumping his cane on the floor. “I don’t care who they are–if they threaten my grandson–in–law, they threaten my family. From now on, every resource we have is yours.”
Her uncles spoke up too.
“I know the mafia. I’ll put out feelers.”
“I have business partners with connections everywhere–legal and not. I’ll see what they can find.”
“If you need money, just say so.”
The cousins beat their chests, fierce and loyal.
“Anyone wants to hurt my cousin–in–law, they’ll have to go through us first!”
Noelle felt warmth fill her chest. She nodded, not bothering with more polite words.
The search widened in the days that followed.
Alliance 749 swept the city, combing the shadows. IBI deployed cutting–edge tech. The Guzmans tapped every favor and contact they had.
But the kidnappers left no trace.
Rumors spread through Kingstowne like wildfire.
“The Menzies are finished this time.”
“Sebastian is cursed. Everyone close to him suffers.”
“I heard the Steeles‘ youngest keeps running to the Menzies. His father threw him out for it.”
“And the Guzmans‘ heiress? Her mother cut her off, but she still won’t leave Sebastian.”
“Foolish. Just wait, it’s only a matter of time before something worse happens.”
