Chapter 478 The Butler Lives
Chapter 478 The Butler Lives
Noelle lifted her head and met Sebastian’s eyes.
Exhaustion and anger warred within her gaze, but there was something deeper too–a sorrow she couldn’t name.
At last, Noelle buried her face in his chest, her voice muffled by his shirt. “I’m sorry… I did everything I could…”
“I know,” Sebastian answered, his voice rough, scraped raw from deep inside. “You did your best.”
His whole body trembled.
It was anger, fear, grief–so many tangled emotions, impossible to sort out or express.
The doctor emerged from the operating room and found them together. He paused, watching with a silent sigh.
He approached, speaking softly.
“Mr. Menzie, Ms. Kain, the patient is stable for now. We’ve arranged the best room. For further treatment—”

“I’ll handle it,” Noelle said, lifting her head from Sebastian’s arms. Her voice was hoarse but certain. “You just need to assist.”
The doctor nodded quickly, relief and respect shining in his eyes. “Yes, of course. As you say.”
Lucas stood off to the side, silent and grim.
He turned away, phone already pressed to his ear.
“Yeah, it’s me. Keep searching. Send everyone. Tear Kingstowne apart if you have to, but I want those people found. Do whatever it takes.”
His voice was cold as ice–utterly unlike his usual lazy drawl.
For more than 20 years, the butler had cared for him and Sebastian. He was family.
Now, after all that, he lay battered and broken.
Lucas’s fist tightened around his phone, knuckles straining white.
After the call, he glanced at the operating room door, then at the two clinging to each other, and leaned back against the wall
silent.
The hallway was painfully quiet.
Only the harsh red light above the operating room door still burned
Elsewhere, in a hidden stronghold, the air was thick with tension.
Dim lights flickered overhead, illuminating a group of men.
Their leader, a one–eyed man with a jagged scar slashed down his face, slammed his fist on the table.

“Damn it. Sebastian and Noelle are tougher than we thought. Alliance 749 and IBI are closing in, and we’ve lost a dozen men. All we managed was injuring an old butler, and now we’re trapped.”
A gaunt man at his side spoke up. “Boss, we can’t hold out much longer. The port’s locked down. If we don’t leave now, we’ll never
make it.”
The one–eyed man sneered, baring his teeth. “Run? I never planned to run.”
He stood and kicked open a battered door behind him.
Inside was a dark, cramped room.
Ethan was tied to a chair, bloodied but with a fierce light in his eyes.
Beside him, Theodore was also bound. His face was drained of color, but his posture was straight and unyielding, eyes cold as steel.
The one–eyed man strode up to Theodore, then drew a knife, the blade flashing in the gloom.
“Stop!” Ethan jerked against his restraints, desperate. “If you have to hurt someone, hurt me!”
The blade fell.
A muffled grunt.
Ethan’s finger hit the floor, blood spurting out in a crimson arc.
He bit down hard, refusing to cry out, even as veins bulged on his forehead and sweat drenched his shirt.
The one–eyed man wiped the blade and flashed a chilling smile. “You’re tough, but it won’t help you.”
He crouched, gripping Ethan’s chin. “So tell me, do you think Sebastian will come for you?”
Ethan shook with pain, but managed to glare back, his voice hoarse but steady. “Cut off my finger if you want. Sebastian isn’t a helpless child anymore. You can’t control him.”
‘Oh really?” The one–eyed man stood, his tone slow and mocking. “We’ll see. No matter how strong he is, he still cares about people. We can use you to lure him right in.”
He shot a glance at Theodore.
“If we use you two as bait, you think he’ll walk into our trap?”
Ethan’s pupils shrank to pinpricks.
“And doesn’t he want to know the truth? What his mother did to bring disaster on her family? Why we’ve hunted him for 20 years? Well, let’s give him his answer.”
With that, the men filed out.
The battered door slammed shut, plunging the room into darkness.
