Lucas pushed through the crowd. The moment he saw Noelle’s thin, hollow face, his eyes turned red.
But he held it in. He forced a grin. Blood from his nose ran into his mouth, and he didn’t even bother wiping it. “You’re out–that’s good! That’s really good! I knew you’d be okay!”
Noelle looked at him. His face was covered in blood, yet he was smiling like a fool. Something in her gaze shifted, just a little.
“Your nose.”
“I’m fine!” Lucas wiped it with his hand. His palm came away covered in blood, but he just rubbed it on his shirt. “Worst case, I can get plastic surgery. You being okay matters more!”
Noelle didn’t speak, but something flickered in her eyes.
Gus squeezed his way forward, tears running down his face. “Mrs. Menzie, just wait. I’ll make you something to eat right now! I’ll make them cook your favorite!”
He turned and rushed toward the kitchen, moving fast for someone his age.
Primo and Duo stood nearby, both smiling in relief, though their eyes were still red.
Alina stayed right beside Noelle, holding her hand tight, like she was afraid Noelle might disappear if she let go.
Noelle said nothing. She let Alina hold her hand and followed everyone downstairs.
Soon, a steaming plate of chicken noodle soup was placed on the table.
The broth was golden. Green onions floated on top. The noodles were thin and white, with a fried egg and a few pieces of tender chicken.
Just the smell alone showed how much care Gus had put into it.
Everyone gathered around the table, watching Noelle.
Noelle sat down and picked up her fork.
She picked up a piece of meat and took a bite.

“Yes!”
Lucas grew anxious. “Noey, can you rest for a few days first? In your condition, forget finding anyone–you’ll collapse before that-
“No need.” Noelle’s voice stayed steady. Not a ripple. “I need to find him as soon as possible.
She paused. Then the corner of her lips lifted slightly.
It was faint. Almost get unnoticed. But everyone saw it.
A smile.
A hard, cold smile.
“And then, I’m going to deal with him properly.
Lucas froze.
He looked at her thin but stubborn face, at those bright, burning eyes. For a moment, he had nothing to say.
Serena froze too. Then she let out a small laugh. As she laughed, her eyes turned red again.
“Fine,” she said. “I’ll help you.”
The doctor arrived soon after and set up an IV.
Noelle leaned back on the couch, watching the clear liquid drip slowly into her vein. Her face showed no emotion.
Sunlight came through the window and fell over her. Now she was so thin you could almost see every bone in her hand.
Everyone sat around the living room. No one spoke. They just watched her.
