okay. I will find him.”
Theodore’s eyes turned red again.
“Child…” His voice trembled. “You… are you sure you can find him?”

“Yes.” Noelle didn’t hesitate. “No matter where he is, no matter where they took him, I will find him. And then-”
She paused, a faint smile on her lips.
“I’ll drag him back and give him a good scolding.”
Theodore looked at her—at those bright, stubborn eyes–and suddenly laughed.
There were tears in that smile. But there was light too.
“Alright,” he said. “I’ll wait for you to bring him back. Then I’ll help you scold him.”
Noelle nodded and stood up.
“Get some rest. I’m going to check on Ethan.”
Noelle stepped out of Theodore’s room and stopped in the hallway.
That bite of sandwich she forced down earlier was now churning in her stomach.
She leaned against the wall, closed her eyes, and took a few deep breaths before pushing the nausea down.
She couldn’t throw up.
If she did, Theodore would worry.
She opened her eyes and kept walking.
Ethan’s room was at the end of the hall. The door was closed.
Just as she reached for it, she heard a low voice from inside. “I’m not changing it.”
It was Ethan.
His voice was dull and stubborn. Like a kid throwing a quiet tantrum–but darker, heavier.

A young nurse spoke next, anxious and helpless. “Mr. Ethan, your wound needs to be cleaned. It could get infected… It’s already leaking…”
“I said no.” His voice dropped even lower, like he was holding something back. “Leave it. Get out.”
“But-”
“Get out.”
Noelle pushed the door open.
Inside, Ethan was leaning against the bed. His left hand was wrapped in thick bandages. He sat there, head down, staring at it without moving.
Light from the window fell across his face, leaving it half in shadow.
The nurse stood beside him, holding a tray. Her eyes were red with stress.
When she saw Noelle, she looked relieved. “Oh, you’re here. Mr. Ethan, he—”
“I know,” Noelle said calmly. “You can go. I’ll handle it.”
