Viola slowly smiled.

The smile was cold. Almost mad.

“Mom,” she said softly. “You’re really such a kind person.”

She tucked the cash away, then walked to the door and looked out at the dim alley.

Then she pulled a wooden stick from her sleeve.

Mary had just reached the entrance of the alley when she heard fast footsteps behind her.

The stick slammed hard into the back of her head.

Mary’s body swayed, then collapsed to the ground.

The food container dropped. The lid popped open. All the food spilled all over the ground.

Viola stood behind her, still holding the stick.

She looked down at the unconscious woman. Then the food was scattered everywhere. A slow smile crept onto her lips.

“Mom…” she crouched down and poked Mary’s face with the stick. “You treat Noelle so well. You even bring her food late at night. What about me? You just hand me some cash and send me away?”

She stood up and kicked the container.

“What a shame. She won’t get to eat it now.”

She tossed the stick aside, bent down, and dragged Mary into a run–down door nearby.

Inside the old, broken room, Mary was tied to a chair. Her head hung low. She was still unconscious.

Viola stood in front of her, staring at that aged face. Then she suddenly laughed.

The sound echoed in the empty room. It was chilling.

“Doesn’t Noelle care about family the most?” she muttered. “Don’t you care about her more than anything?”

She took out her phone and snapped a picture of Mary.

Then she opened a message and typed, “I have your mother. If you want to see her alive, come and trade yourself for her. I’ll send the address. No police, and don’t even think about bringing backup. You know what happens if you do.”

She attached the photo.

Then she tossed the phone aside and leaned against the wall, staring at the unconscious Mary, her smile growing deeper.

“Noelle, let’s see where you run this time.”

Noelle had just finished showering. She sat by the bed, drying her hair.

She hadn’t been sleeping well these past few days. Nightmares kept coming–about Sebastian, about everything. Tonight, she took a sleeping pill. She hoped she could finally rest.

“Boss.” Gunner pushed the door open. “Ms. Kain just rushed out. Something’s off.”

“She left?”

Jasper shot to his feet, grabbed his coat, and headed out.
