“Mom, didn’t you say the man from Melrose Manor was ugly, cruel, and about to die?” Viola blurted out. “But what we saw today–he looked like something out of a dream!”

Viola regretted it more than anything she had ever done.

“Who knew the rumors were so wrong?” Willow said, clearly annoyed. “That man is nothing. like the stories.” She felt a twinge of regret too. Noelle had landed an unbelievable match. But then Willow remembered that man was a cripple and felt a lot better.

“So what if he’s rich and handsome?” Willow added coldly. “He’s still disabled. Noelle will be stuck with him for life. That’s no different from living like a widow with a breathing husband.”

Viola felt much more comfortable at her mother’s word. Right. No matter how perfect that man was, he still couldn’t walk. Marrying him meant the wife needed to live like a widow. Noelle wasn’t winning after all.

“Stop thinking about this,” Willow said, patting Viola’s hand. “The SAT is coming up. Focus on studying. Get into Kingstowne University. Once you’re there, boys from top families will line up for you. Noelle? Noelle is just a trade school student; she’s not even worth comparing. Elmer is such a disappointment. You have to make me proud. Understand?”

Viola nodded with confidence. “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll be the top scorer.”

Melrose Manor.

Today was the final day of Dr. Kain’s treatment for Sebastian.

As usual, Dr. Kain was scheduled to arrive at 2:00 p.m.

After lunch, Noelle let out a nervous little laugh. “Well … um, honey?”

“Yes?” Sebastian looked up at her, pretending not to know.

“I really want to meet Dr. Kain with you. I do. Truly,” Noelle said quickly. “But I can’t help it. Something urgent came up at school. I have to leave now.”

“Leaving again?” Sebastian closed his book and smiled slowly. “You’ve been going out quite often lately.”

“Oh well, you know, school stuff,” Noelle said, her face scrunched up.

“Mrs. Menzie,” Gus stepped in eagerly, “Dr. Kain will be here any minute. You’re not in that much of a hurry. Why don’t you meet her before you leave? After that, the driver can take you straight to school.”

The other servants nodded in agreement.

That Dr. Kain clearly had ideas about their boss. The best way to stop that was to let her see Noelle, so she’d know Sebastian was taken.

Noelle was at a loss for words.

If she stayed, Dr. Kain wouldn’t show up at all.

Sebastian noticed Noelle’s troubled expression and smiled even more. “Dr. Kain is about your age,” he said casually. “You two would probably get along. It’d be a shame not to meet her.”

Noelle stared ahead, completely at a loss.

The smile in Sebastian’s eyes grew deeper.

Just then, Lucas arrived. He was wearing a suit today, looking less like a playboy and far more polished than usual. Tall and relaxed, he walked in with easy charm. He even carried a bouquet of flowers.

“Sebastian, what do you think?” Lucas asked. “Pretty good look, right?”

He grinned. “After today’s therapy, I’m planning to confess to Dr. Kain. If she says no, that’s fine. Chasing a girl isn’t supposed to be easy. I’ll ask her out to dinner and take it slow.”

Both Noelle and Sebastian fell silent at this.

Sebastian saw Lucas and immediately thought of the promise he had made earlier and agreed to let Lucas pursue Dr. Kain.

He pressed his fingers to his brow. “Put the flowers down. Don’t give them to her later.”

“Huh? Why?” Lucas asked.

“You two aren’t a good match.”

Lucas looked confused. “But you said Dr. Kain and I were perfect for each other.”

Sebastian opened his mouth, then closed it again.
