Chapter 528 The Bite
His voice came in broken gasps, like he could stop breathing at any second.
“My wife and kid… they’re still waiting at home… they don’t have anything to eat… they’ll starve…”
Noelle looked down at his wounds, then at his face, pale from blood loss and poison.
Even in this state, he was still worried about his wife and child.
At least he had some backbone.
“You’re not going to die,” Noelle said.
For the fact that he was still acting like a man, she decided to save him.
The man froze for a second, then gave a bleak smile. It was full of despair.

“Miss, don’t try to comfort me. On this island, if a venomous snake bites you, you just wait to die. Unless…”
His eyes throat.
dimmed, and his voice dropped even lower, like he was forcing the words out from deep in his
“Unless you’re one of the Four Great Families. They have medicine.”
“You don’t?”
“We’re just fishermen. Where would we get medicine?”
His voice grew weaker and weaker, and his eyelids began to
droop.
He forced out a bitter smile, one even uglier than crying.
“What this island lacks most is doctors and medicine. Lives like ours don’t deserve medicine. If I die, I die. I just feel sorry for my wife and kid.”
He blinked hard, like he was trying to stay awake.
“Please… take the fish back… the most run–down house on the east side of the town… there’s a crooked tree out front… please…”
After he finished speaking, his eyelids finally gave out and slowly closed.
“I said you’re not going to die.”
Noelle took a syringe out of the bag she was carrying.
The man’s eyes were already about to close. In his haze, he only saw the young woman draw some clear liquid into the syringe, then inject it into his arm.
ll her it was useless.

But he no longer had the strength to speak.

What was strange was that not long after the needle went in, the burning fire in his chest began to slowly fade.
The sharp pain in his legs also seemed to case.
He suddenly snapped his eyes open.
Noelle was putting the syringe away, her face calm, like nothing had happened.
The man stared at her with wide eyes, then at his legs, then back at her. His lips trembled, but for a long time, no words came out.
“Y–You…” His voice nearly floated away, like he had seen a ghost. “How do you have medicine?!”
Noelle looked up at him.
“Isn’t this just regular antivenom?”
“Regular antivenom?!” The man’s voice shot up. He looked like he’d been struck by lightning and nearly sprang off the ground. “Miss, do you even know that on this island, only the Four Great Families have antivenom? If regular people get bitten by a venomous snake, all they can do is wait to die! You… you…”
He struggled to sit up, but Noelle pressed him back down.
“Lie down.” Her voice was calm, but it carried a force that could not be argued with. “The poison isn’t fully out yet. If you move around, it could flare up again.”
How could the man lie still?
He stared at Noelle with wide eyes, like he was looking at some kind of monster.
“Miss, are you from one of the Four Great Families?!” His voice trembled, mixed with awe, fear, and a trace of hope. “Which family? The Pattons? The Millers? Or…”
Noelle, Lucas, and Jasper exchanged a look.
The expressions on all three faces were exactly the same.
It seemed this island really was pretty behind the times. They had only taken out a bottle of antivenom, something completely ordinary outside, and this man already looked ready to worship them.
“This humble man greets you, honored guests! Greetings, honored guests!”
Seeing that he was about to kneel, Noelle immediately reached out to steady him. “I’m not from one of the Four Great Families,” she said.
Not from the Four Great Families?
How was that possible?

The man stared blankly. “Then how do you have medicine?!”
“Bought it outside.”
The man was even more stunned.
“Outside?” he repeated, like he was hearing something from another world. His eyes were full of confusion. “Outside… where is outside?”
They had not left the island in hundreds of years, so naturally he had no idea.

Noelle knew she would not be able to explain it clearly anytime soon. She simply stood up and dusted off her hands.
Moonlight fell over her, stretching her shadow long behind her.
“Where’s your home?” she asked, looking down at the still–stunned man. “We’ll take you back.”
Noelle and the others helped the man along the uneven dirt path. After about fifteen minutes, a few low houses finally came into view in the distance.
The house at the far eastern end was indeed the most run–down. The thatch on the roof had been blown tchy and bare by the sea wind, and more than half the plaster on the walls had peeled away, exposing
yellow–brown mud bricks underneath.
A crooked tree stood at the door, bent to one side by the wind.
“We’re here… we’re here.” The man, whose name was Sidney Buckley, weakly raised a hand and pointed.
Before they even got close, a woman rushed out of the house. She was wearing rough clothes covered in patches. Her hair was loosely pinned up with a wooden hairpin, and her face was full of panic.
A little girl followed behind her, with two pigtails. She was thin and tiny, with bright black eyes.
“Honey!”
