Chapter 533 The Disguise
Lara’s face had gone pale. She was clearly terrified, but she still gritted her teeth and nodded. Grabbing Noelle’s hand, she dragged her toward the back room.
Jasper and Lucas were shoved inside too.
The little boy stood where he was without moving, but Lara scooped him up and stuffed him into Noelle’s arms.
“Put these on. Hurry!”
Lara dug out a few wrinkled old clothes from the bottom of a chest. They were all hers–dull gray rough–spun clothes with patches sewn all over them, carrying a salty, fishy smell from the sea wind.
She also pulled out two worn headscarves and hurriedly wrapped one around Noelle’s head.
Noelle said nothing and let Lara fuss with her.
The rough clothes went over her own. The sleeves hung too long, and the hem dragged down to her knees. With the headscarf wrapped around her head and half her face covered, she looked exactly like a fisherman’s wife.
Lara grabbed a handful of ash from the stove and smeared two streaks across Noelle’s face.
Then Lara dug out a loud, colorful jacket. It was something the woman next door had given her. She had always thought it was too flashy and had never worn it, but now she did not care. She shoved it into Lucas’s hands. “Sir, put this on!”
Lucas fell silent.
He had never seen such a ridiculous jacket in his life.
But this was not the time to be picky.
Grinding his teeth, Lucas took the jacket and pulled it on. It was too short and hung awkwardly at his waist. The bright clashing colors looked absurd against his utterly miserable expression. The result looked deeply strange.
Lara studied him for two seconds, then grabbed another handful of ash and smeared two streaks across his face. Still not satisfied, she dug out half a box of old rouge from under the stove. Who knew how many years it had been sitting there. She opened it, and it smelled rancid.
She did not care. Dipping her finger into it, she painted a bright red circle on each of Lucas’s cheeks.
Round and vivid. Like a monkey’s butt.
Lucas froze where he stood. He looked like he had just been struck by lightning.
Then Lara looked at Jasper. After sizing him up, she decided his build was too sturdy to pass as an ordinary fisherman. After thinking for a second, she threw an old straw rain cape over him and jammed a broken straw hat low over his face. Just like that, he looked like an honest, weathered fisherman.
The little boy was small and easy to hide, so Lara tucked him inside the rice barrel. As long as nobody opened it, no one would find
him.
“All right, all right-”

Before Lara could finish, someone pounded on the courtyard gate hard enough to shake it.
“Open up! Inspection!”
Sidney took a deep breath, straightened his collar, and walked over to lift the latch.

Five or six inspectors in black were standing outside. At the front was a fat man with a fleshy face. A blade hung at his waist, and he held a registry book in one hand. His eyes were sharp and vicious.
“Officers, you’re here!” Sidney bent slightly at the waist, plastering on a flattering smile. His voice was full of nervous eagerness. “You’ve worked hard, really hard. Want some water-”
“Cut the crap.” The lead inspector shoved him aside and swept his gaze over the yard like a hawk. “Seen any strangers? Anyone you don’t know? Anyone not from this island?”
“No, no!” Sidney waved his hands frantically. “This is just a tiny place. Where would strangers come from? It’s all family here, all family…”
The inspector ignored him. His gaze landed on Camille, who was squatting on the ground playing with stones.
Camille looked up and gave him a sweet smile. “Hello, sirs!”
The inspector’s expression softened for a second, but his suspicion did not disappear. He waved his hand. “Search inside!”
“Officer, officer-” Sidney hurriedly tried to block him. “Really, there’s no one. It’s all family here. Look at this broken place. There’s nowhere to hide anyone-”
“Move!” The inspector shoved him hard. Sidney stumbled two steps and slammed into the doorframe, his face going pale.
Just as several inspectors were about to rush inside, the curtain to the back room was lifted, and Lara walked out.
Noelle and the others followed behind her.
Noelle walked in front. She wore rough patched clothes, a torn headscarf, and streaks of ash across her face. Her head was lowered, shoulders hunched, looking timid and meek. She looked exactly like an ordinary fisherman’s wife. The kind of woman who could be thrown into a crowd and never found again.
Behind her, Jasper came out, supporting Lucas.
Lucas-
Everyone’s eyes locked onto him.
That loud, ridiculous jacket hung off him in a riot of red and green, like someone had spilled an entire dye shop on his body.
He had two bright red circles painted on his cheeks. His hair had been ruffled into a complete bird’s nest, and there was even a grain of rice stuck at the corner of his mouth.
He leaned against Jasper’s shoulder, eyes unfocused. Every so often, the corner of his mouth twitched. He was mumbling under his breath. If anyone listened closely, it sounded like, “I’m an idiot, I’m an idiot, I’m an idiot…”
Jasper was expressionless. He wore a ragged straw cape and broken hat pulled low over his face. With a steady hand supporting Lucas, he looked exactly like a dependable fisherman’s older brother.

The inspectors stared at Lucas for several long seconds. The lead inspector frowned. “Who’s that?”

Lara quickly stepped forward. She pasted on a smile, her voice carrying a helpless note. “Officer, he’s my relative’s boy from my mother’s side. His parents passed away, and… well, he’s not all there in the head. He had nowhere else to go, so he came to stay with us…”
As she spoke, she sighed and reached up to wipe the grain of rice from the corner of Lucas’s mouth.
