“The thing I hate most is people like you who throw your weight around and bully the weak! If we were in Kingstowne, I’d have crippled every last one of you already!”
As he spoke, Lucas glanced down at his loud floral shirt, then touched the blush smeared across his face and let out a dramatic sigh. “Such a badass moment, and I’m stuck looking like this. Totally ruined my image!”
While he was talking, the third inspector charged in with a knife raised high, swinging straight for Lucas’s head.
Lucas didn’t even turn around. He shifted sideways, and the blade sliced past his ear before slamming into the wooden post beside him. It sank in nearly half an inch with a sharp crack, jammed so deeply that the man couldn’t yank it back out.
The guy froze for a split second, and Lucas’s knee slammed into his stomach. The inspector doubled over with a muffled grunt, folding up like a shrimp before collapsing onto the ground.
“You think you can sneak attack me? At least know who you’re dealing with first! You seriously think you can out–trash–talk me?”
Lucas dusted off his hands and looked around.
The two remaining inspectors exchanged shaky glances before pulling out their guns with trembling hands. The barrels swung wildly between Noelle and Jasper, neither of them daring to fire first.
“D–don’t move! Nobody move!” one of them shouted, his voice shaking despite the tough act. “I–I’ll shoot! I mean it!”
Noelle didn’t even look at him.
She slowly turned her head, her eyes settling on his face.
The man felt a chill crawl down his spine. His finger rested on the trigger, but he couldn’t force himself to pull it.
“Go ahead,” Noelle said softly. “Let’s see whether your gun’s faster or my hand is.”
The man froze.
So did the one beside him.
“I’ll count to three.” Noelle stepped forward.
The man stumbled back a step in panic.
“One.”
Another step back.
“Two.”
Bang!
The gun went off.
Not because he fired on purpose. His hands were shaking so badly that the gun discharged accidentally.

The bullet struck the dirt beside Noelle’s feet, kicking up a spray of soil.
The courtyard fell silent instantly. Everyone stared at Noelle.
Noelle glanced down at the smoking bullet hole by her feet, then looked back up at the inspector, whose face had already gone deathly pale, his gun wobbling uncontrollably in his hand.
A faint smile curved her lips, cold enough to cut.
“Three.”
The man let out a shrill scream. His gun clattered to the ground as he spun around and bolted. After two steps, he tripped flat on his face and scrambled back up, crawling and stumbling toward the exit.
The other man ran right behind him, terrified out of his mind.
“Stop right there!” the inspector captain shouted furiously, his face red with rage. “What the hell are you running for? Get back here! All of you, get back here!”
Nobody listened.
The two men took off and disappeared in the blink of an eye.
The inspector captain stood there alone. Both his arms were useless. He couldn’t run, couldn’t fight, and could only stand helplessly in the middle of the courtyard as the wind tugged at the edge of his clothes, leaving him looking utterly pathetic.
His face shifted from ashen to ghostly white, then from white to a dark red.
“J–just you wait!” he screeched through clenched teeth, his voice sharp and hoarse like a duck getting strangled. “I–I’m getting the Covingtons involved! The Covingtons won’t let you off! You outsiders are dead! Every single one of you!”
After shouting that, he turned and ran. He nearly fell after two steps and had to grab the doorframe to steady himself before stumbling out into the night.
The courtyard finally went quiet.
Sidney collapsed onto the ground, gasping for breath, his face pale as paper. Lara held Camille tightly, her whole body still trembling.
Camille peeked out from her mother’s arms and whispered, “You’re amazing, Noelle…”
Noelle said nothing. She only crouched down and gently patted Camille’s head.
Jasper expressionlessly removed his battered straw hat and glanced at Lucas. “You can fight.”
“Obviously.” Lucas puffed out his chest immediately. “I’ve never lost a fight.”
“Your outfit’s still ugly, though.”
He paused. “Shut up.”
