Zane stopped walking.

Without turning around, he spoke lightly from up ahead, but everyone in the hallway heard him clearly. “If she can’t heal her, I’ll take responsibility.”
Then he walked off without another glance back.
Noelle followed after him, her gaze cold and dismissive.
As Lucas passed the inspectors, he turned his head and flashed them a grin. Under the moonlight, he looked unbelievably smug
Jasper walked by expressionlessly. The loose strap of his ragged rain cape fluttered in the wind and smacked across the inspector captain’s face.
The group disappeared around the end of the hallway.
The inspector captain stood there, trembling with rage, his face cycling between red and white while his teeth ground loudly together.
A few of his men edged closer and asked quietly, “Boss… what do we do now?”
“What do we do?” He glared viciously in the direction they’d gone. “We follow them. I want to see what kind of miracle she thinks she can pull off. If she really screws up Mrs. Covington’s legs, we won’t even need to touch her. Mr. Covington will tear her apart himself!”
The others exchanged looks and hurried after him.
Zane continued leading Noelle and the others toward Elsa’s courtyard.
He wasn’t walking fast, but every step felt steady.
Just before reaching the main room, he suddenly slowed down.
“Ms. Kain.” His voice was quiet.
Noelle gave a soft hum.
“You’re from outside the island, aren’t you?”
Noelle’s footsteps stopped for half a second, and her eyes instantly turned cold.
Behind her, Jasper and Lucas tightened their grips around the guns at their waists almost at the same time. Zane stopped walking and turned around.
Moonlight spilled across his pale, sickly face. Right now, though, he looked calm, almost faintly amused.
He glanced at Noelle, then at the two men behind her who had visibly tensed up, and lightly shook his head

“No need to get nervous.”
Jasper’s fingers still rested against the grip of his gun without moving.
Leaning lazily against one of the wooden pillars, Zane spoke like he was talking about something completely unimportant. “I’ve never been like everyone else here. Ever since I was a kid, I thought living trapped on this island wasn’t much different from living in prison. Nobody knows what the outside world’s like, and nobody cares. All they know are the rules passed down for generations. Outsiders are evil. Leave the island, and you die.”
He smiled faintly, though there was something complicated buried in it. “But I wanted to see the outside world.”
Noelle watched him silently.
Zane continued, “I know the world outside has probably changed completely after all these centuries. We’re the ones hiding here, refusing to move forward. I don’t know whether outsiders are good or bad, but at least you saved Sidney. Bad people don’t do things like that.”
He straightened up and looked directly at Noelle.
“I don’t care why you came to this island, and I don’t care what you plan to do here. I only want one thing”
He spoke slowly, one word at a time. “Heal my mother’s legs.”
The courtyard fell quiet for a moment.
Wind rustled through the bamboo leaves with a soft swishing sound.
Noelle looked into Zane’s eyes.
There was exhaustion there. Sickness too. And something buried deep inside him that had clearly been weighing on him for years.
This man really was different from the rest of the people on the island.
“Fine.” A faint smile curved her lips. “Since you trust me, then I’ll guarantee it too. Your mother’s legs will be fully healed.”
Zane smiled and pushed open the doors to the main room. “Please.”
Warm lamplight filled the room, and a strange smell hung in the air.
The second Noelle stepped inside, she recognized it.
It wasn’t medicine. It smelled like instant pasta, mixed with greasy seasoning powder and broth.
Before she could think further, a frantic rustling sound suddenly came from the bed.
“Wait, wait, where do I hide it…”
Elsa was hurriedly stuffing something beneath her pillow.
She moved too fast and knocked over the small bedside table. A cup clattered onto the floor, spilling coffee everywhere.
She ignored it and hurriedly shoved it deeper under the blankets, looking exactly like a kid caught sneaking candy.

“Mom.” Zane stood at the doorway, his tone flat.
Elsa froze instantly. Slowly, she turned around and forced out a guilty smile. “Zane? Why are you here so late? -I was just about to
sleep…”
“What are you hiding?”
“N-nothing…”
Zane walked over and pulled a paper cup out from under the blanket.
The cup was brightly colored, with bold letters printed across the side. Creamy Garlic Beef Pasta.
The lid was still peeled halfway open, a plastic fork sticking out of the pasta. The pasta had softened to the perfect texture, and steam still curled from the cup.
Zane lifted it and stared at her.
Elsa’s face instantly flushed red, like a kid caught sneaking candy before dinner. “I-I just wanted a taste… only a little…”
Zane let out a helpless sigh. “Mom, Dad’s told you a million times already. That junk food isn’t healthy. It was shipped in from the mainland…”
“I know, I know, but your dad’s way too strict,” Elsa muttered, staring longingly at the cup and swallowing hard. “I only had a few bites… It’s really good…”
Shaking his head, Zane set the instant pasta back on the table before turning toward the doorway. “Mom, I brought some people with me.”
Only then did Elsa notice the others standing by the entrance.
