Zane stood there without moving.
He glanced at the bruised–up inspectors, then turned toward the emotionless fisher girl standing behind him.
Moonlight fell across her dirt–streaked face, blurring her features, but her eyes were impossibly bright.
He stayed silent for a moment.
The inspector captain panicked. “Mr. Covington, what are you hesitating for? These people-”
“They’re here to treat my mother.” Zane’s voice wasn’t loud, but every person in the hallway heard it clearly.
The inspector captain froze with his mouth hanging open.
“W–what? Treat Mrs. Covington?”
“That’s right.” Zane sounded calm. “Ms. Kain is the doctor I invited to treat my mother’s legs.”
“A doctor?” the inspector captain shrieked, his eyes nearly popping out. “Her? Mr. Covington, you’ve got to be joking. She’s just some country girl! How could she possibly know medicine? She isn’t even in the system-”
“If I say she is, then she is.” Zane cut him off calmly, but there was no room for argument in his tone.
The inspector captain’s face turned bright red. His lips shook as he tried to speak, but no words came out.
He looked at Zane’s unreadable expression, then at Noelle’s even colder face, and felt the anger clogging in his chest with nowhere to go.
“Mr. Covington, y–you’ve been tricked by her!” he shouted anxiously, stomping his foot. “She’s obviously a fraud. She attacked people right in front of us today. Her skills are way beyond those of normal people. She has to be from outside the island! According to the rules, we should arrest them immediately and interrogate them properly!”
The inspector captain ranted furiously, but Zane immediately caught the important part.
“She attacked you?” Zane glanced at his swollen wrist. “What exactly were you doing at their house?”
The inspector captain froze, his eyes darting away. “W–we were carrying out a search…”
“A search? Under whose orders?”
“Y–your father’s orders! Someone escaped onto the island, so we were searching house–to–house…”
“And you ended up getting beaten at someone’s home?” Zane’s voice stayed light and emotionless. “Sounds more like you started it first.”
