"You keep calling him a psycho. Is that really your type?"
Noelle shot her a sideways glance. "If you like that kind of guy, I could introduce you to one."
"You!"
Noelle never usually talked back or stood up for herself. This was the first time she'd ever snapped at anyone. Felicia's face darkened.
Noelle brushed right past her.
Watching her retreating back, Felicia sneered. What was Noelle even so proud of? She was just putting on a brave face.
She was clearly being abused already!
After a moment's thought, Felicia pulled out her phone and called Viola. "Guess who I saw at the night market? Noelle! She looks awful, wearing cheap clothes from God knows where. She's fallen this far. And the best part? She has bruises on her wrists—looks like someone roughed her up. Tsk, tsk. So pathetic…"
On the other end, Viola was with the Kain family. Hearing this, she purposely put the call on speakerphone so everyone could hear.
"Wow, she's really that miserable? How sad."
Viola faked a worried look at her parents and brothers. "Mom, Dad, Jasper, should we help Noelle?"
"Help? Why on earth would we help her?" Willow snapped in disgust, her voice sharp. "She cut all ties with us! Whether she lives or dies is none of our business. I knew she'd end up like this. Most women don't even last a second day at Melrose Manor—she's lucky she made it out alive at all!"
Gresham's expression was cold as well; he didn't care about Noelle in the slightest. In fact, he felt relieved they'd already severed ties with her. Otherwise, they'd end up angering someone from Melrose Manor because of her.
Jasper took a slow sip of his coffee. "She cut ties with us. So she's nothing to us now. If she's smart enough to come back and beg us for forgiveness, we might throw her some scraps and let her work as a maid."
"Exactly! Viola, you're too soft," Elmer muttered, not looking up from his racing game controller, his tone dripping with contempt and mockery. "She chose her own path. She deserves everything she gets. You're still unwell—don't trouble yourself over her!"
Listening to her family's words, Viola couldn't help but smile. A triumphant grin tugged at her lips.
…
The largest herbal shop owned by the 749 Alliance stood in the busiest district of the night market.
The night market was chaotic and packed with people of all kinds. Although there was no security posted at the shop entrance, no one dared stir up trouble there.
The mere "749" sign hanging above the door was enough to keep everyone away.
"Boss."
Harlan Clark, the shop's owner, was waiting at the entrance. The moment he spotted Noelle, he stepped forward and greeted her respectfully.
Alliance 749 had been founded by Noelle, Serena, and a few other friends. None of them could agree on who should lead, so in the end, they all unanimously chose Noelle as their leader, with the others serving as vice-leaders.
"Harlan," Noelle greeted him with a smile.
Harlan was forty years old and an expert in pharmacology. Many organizations had tried to recruit him, but he'd joined Alliance 749 because Noelle had saved his gravely ill mother five years earlier.
He had been loyal to her ever since.
"Serena already gave the order. All the herbs you requested are ready. We've just been waiting for you to come collect them," Harlan said with a smile.
Noelle nodded and stepped inside, with Harlan following respectfully behind her.
They walked down a private corridor. Just as they reached an inner door, a voice drifted over from the area next to them.
It was Felicia.
She was speaking politely to the staff at the entrance, clearly trying to get inside to buy herbs—her attitude a complete contrast to how she'd treated Noelle.
Noelle glanced over once, then kept walking, saying in a low, steady voice: "That woman at the door. Starting today, she is banned from every Alliance 749 shop."
