Felicia struggled in pain as she slapped at the hand choking her neck. She forced out a broken sound. "I ... I don't know!"
"Aren't you the star student from Riverdale University's medical school? How could you not know?" Felix's eyes were bloodshot. Roman had stopped breathing right in front of him. His rage was so strong that he almost snapped Felicia's neck on the spot.
"I ... "
Just when everything was about to fall apart, Felix caught something from the corner of his eye. Noelle had quietly crouched down beside Roman.
With a quick flip of her wrist, a thin needle flashed in the air and landed with deadly accuracy on the top of Roman's head.
"What are you doing?" Felix let go of Felicia at once and lunged forward in shock and anger.
"If you don't want him to really die, then shut up." Noelle's voice was cold as ice, sharp and final. Felix froze.
What did she mean by that?
Is Mr. Haller ... not dead?
"Mr. Haller ... didn't he already ... " Felix's voice shook.
"Who told you he was dead? He only stopped breathing for a moment." Noelle moved fast, her hands nothing but flickering shadows as more silver needles dropped into place. She didn't even lift her head when she warned, "Say one more word, and he might not come back at all."
"Don't trust her! She's just a tech school girl! How could she know any ... " Felicia clutched her burning neck and screamed.
"Shut up!" Felix snapped, glaring at her viciously.
Noelle was right. Roman was already in terrible shape. Nothing could get worse. And even though Felix didn't understand medicine, he'd seen doctors use needles before. Noelle's moves were clean, fast, and steady. She looked like someone who actually knew what she was doing.
So he decided to take the gamble.
Felicia shrank back under his glare, though resentment simmered beneath her fear.
Let Noelle pretend she can save someone. She is just a tech school girl—what could she know?
The nerves around the brain were dangerous. Even the professors Felicia knew were extremely careful. Noelle looked like she was stabbing at random. How could she possibly save him? Felicia planned to blame everything on Noelle once the old man finally died.
"Cough! Cough! Cough!"
Roman suddenly coughed hard—then spat out a mouthful of dark, dirty blood.
His chest rose and fell fast. He sucked in huge breaths of air. The blue color on his face faded, and warm pink quickly returned.
"Mr. Haller!"
Felix nearly cried as he rushed to him.
He was alive.
"How is this possible?"
Felicia stared wide-eyed.
How?
How could Noelle really bring someone back?
He had stopped breathing!
No way ... no way ...
Noelle didn't know medicine!
Then she remembered the cut she had made earlier. It must have been that. It had to be me.
Roman must not have had time to breathe earlier, and now he finally got the bad blood out.
I must have been the one who saved him. Noelle just jumped in to steal the credit.
Yes. That had to be it.
Felicia took a deep breath, forced down her panic, and put on her gentle, confident smile again. "I knew it," she said warmly. "My treatment finally took effect. Mr. Haller is fine now. He just needed to expel the bad blood. That was only a short fainting spell. Everyone was just scared for nothing."
In just a few sentences, Felicia claimed all the credit for herself.
"Oh, so you saved him! You scared me to death! I thought you'd actually killed him with your treatment! But of course—you're Dr. Hernandez's daughter, and a top student at the med school. No tech school kid could ever compare."
"How could a tech school student save someone? What a joke!"
His cloudy but sharp eyes looked past Felicia and fell straight on Noelle, who was packing her things. "Miss ... you're the one who saved me! Thank you! If it weren't for you, I'd be dead by now!"
Felicia's face froze.
Noelle lifted her head, and her beautiful face was finally revealed to Roman.
He had been about to say more, thinking she was honest and kind ... but the moment he saw her clearly, his pupils shrank. All his words got stuck in his throat.
This face ...
How could it look so familiar?
Noelle didn't notice anything strange. At that moment, the sharp siren of the ambulance grew louder as it came closer. She stood up and said simply, "Your life is safe for now, but your condition is still serious. Let the paramedics take you to the hospital for a full check-up."
Then Noelle turned and walked away.
"Hey! Miss! Wait!"
Roman tried to push himself up in panic, but a sharp pain tore through his chest. He groaned and fell back down.
His call was drowned out by the ambulance siren. He could only watch as her slim figure disappeared at the edge of the crowd.
"Mr. Haller! The ambulance is here. Let me help you in!"
"Don't mind me! Just ... "
Roman's heart was in chaos. The pain in his body was nothing compared to the shock in his chest.
Too similar ... Those eyes, that face ... The same as the girl I remembered!
"Hurry! Give me my phone! Now!" he rasped.
Felix didn't know what was happening, but he handed it over right away.
Roman's hands shook as he dialed a number as fast as he could. His voice trembled with excitement.
"I just ... I just saw a girl ... She looks exactly like Miss Haller when she was young! The same! Could she ... could she be the daughter who went missing all those years ago?"
