Snowball suddenly shouted, “Hudson! Hudson!

His tone was sharp and irritated.

“You seriously forgot your egg?

“That thing is priceless! It’s Anneliese’s kid! Pick it up already!”

Annelise figured Snowball might be spacing things out on purpose to avoid looking suspicious.

She thought for a second, then came up with a new plan.

She casually packed her bag like she was getting ready to head out.

Snowball spotted her and called out right away.

“Anneliese, where are you going?”

“I’ve been thinking. Maybe I should go talk to Evan. Maybe we just misunderstood each other.”

Snowball’s expression tensed up. The softness in his eyes vanished.

Even his white wolf ears gave a small twitch.

“What misunderstanding?

“You saw the way he acted. I saw him with my own eyes. He went after the kid!”

“I’m not saying he didn’t. I’m asking why. Maybe I said something earlier that made him get the wrong idea.

“Either way, Snowball, I need to hear it from him.”

Snowball didn’t get it. He’d finally kicked both guys out. Why was she chasing after one of

them?

Snowball bit down on his lower lip.

He let go of her hand as she crouched to tie her shoes.

His eyes turned dark. He backed away a few steps and slipped around behind the house. He clenched both fists and slammed them hard into his chest.

Anneliese actually said she liked that stupid peacock?

He was just a big flashy chicken!

He braced himself against the wall. The pain in his chest started small but shot into something sharp and brutal.

His knees buckled in under a minute. He leaned into the wall. His breath caught in his throat.

D*mn it. He’d gone too far.

But if he didn’t fake a full-blown episode now, and Anneliese left, kicking Evan out would’ve meant nothing.

Annelise had been watching from the start.

Snowball thought he was slick, but his act had holes everywhere.

She grabbed his wrist to check his pulse.

Even from his wrist, she could tell. The hit had hessed with his heart.

He was totally insane.

She pulled out wooden needles and jabbed then into the main pressure points.

Snowball looked pale. Cold sweat soaked the bags over his eyes.

He still held onto her hand.

“I’m sorry, Anneliese… I stopped you from going after Evan…”

And there it was.

That one line. “Sorry I got in your way.” That was the one that hit the hardest.

Annelise finally got it.

This guy had watched way too many shows about manipulative lovers.

How the hell did he end up like this?

She kept going with the treatment.

Snowball already had heart problems. Adding stress made it worse.

It was a lot more serious than before. Fixing it would take time.

He just lost twice what he thought he gained.

She called Rokky to help carry Snowball inside.

Right then, the blond High Priest finally walked in.

He caught the sharp scent of blood the second he entered.

He elbowed Anneliese lightly and asked, “Hey, sweetheart, what happened out here? That Snowball kid… he lost it again?”
