Chapter 101 Used to It

Annelise raised an eyebrow. She’d gotten numb to that nickname by now.

The old man used it all the time-multiple times a day. Even when she denied it, he kept using it.

She gave up trying to correct him.

“How’d you know Snowball was the one causing a scene?”

“Sweetheart, I’ve lived a long life. I’ve seen more boys act up than I can count, especially over females. Two guys fall for the same matriarch, but she only likes one. The other one just can’t let it go.”

“You’re saying Snowball’s into me? Well, I’m not into him. He’s like a little brother to me. And, this’ll sound crazy, but he really was my brother. For real.

“And whatever he’s doing now? It’s not love. It’s like some needy puppy throwing a tantrum because his owner won’t pet him. He hasn’t figured it out. Thinks it’s love, but it’s not.”

The High Priest let out a laugh. “If you say he’s your brother, I’ll take it. That just means I have another son.”

“Seriously? How many kids are you trying to collect? You don’t have your own? At your age, you should have a whole legacy by now.”

For once, the High Priest went quiet. Then, he finally said, “I did have a kid. A daughter. She was still young. One day, she got a bad fever and broke out in rashes. No one could figure it

out. She died.

“My matriarch was amazing. She really wanted to try again, but I couldn’t do it. I let her move on with someone else.

“Time flew. Over two hundred years went by. Her other kids? They’re all gone. Even the grandkids probably wouldn’t recognize me. Wouldn’t care even if they did.”

He added that his matriarch died early too.

She passed not long after leading the tribe into a new chapter.

She left him all her spirit energy to carry forward as the witness.

That made things rocky between him and the other mates.

Annelise’s throat tightened.

Chapter 101 Used to It

A strange ache pulled at her chest.

“So that’s why you wanna learn medicine? You still wanna save someone?”

Tm not trying to save anybody. I can’t. I just wanna know what illness killed my sweetheart.

“If I don’t find out, it’ll never sit right.”

Something inside Annelise softened.

He lost his kid. She didn’t have parents. Maybe they weren’t that different.

“Well.. okay, I’ll teach you. I’m not the best teacher, but I’ll walk you through the herbs, pressure points, whatever comes up.”

The High Priest lit up like a kid on Christmas. You mean it?! You’re really saying yes!”

“Yeah.. but I still can’t call you Dad. I’ve never said that word out loud.”

“Take your time. Who knows, one day it might slip out. You said you wouldn’t teach me either. Now look at us. People change. I’m not who I used to be. You’re not either.”

He got serious again. He said he’d already found the fat rabbit and masked its scent with his own. That’s why nobody could pick up its trail.

The rabbit was totally fine.

He was just sulking and refusing to come back.

“You’re the only one who can calm him down. And you really need to clean up your mess soon. Because your old man here talked to a few families.

“The ones whose sons or brothers got taken by the chief and never returned. The High Priest said those guys all had something in common. The chief had been around them a lot before they disappeared.

“Each one claimed the matriarch liked them, saying she was gonna bond with them, but it never happened

“It’s shady as hell. There are plenty of reasons to kill, but why would they all think the chief wanted them?

“She could’ve had anyone she wanted. Even if they said no, there were still tons of males lining up for her.”

He shook his pale blond hair with a sigh.

“Hell if I know. None of it adds up.”

Annelise said there could be all kinds of reasons. It was way too vague.

Then, she paused. How smart could half-feral people really be?

Something clicked in her head.

She raised a hand to signal the High Priest to wait. She’d deal with the backyard issue first, then sit down and really think. Wouldn’t take long.

“Yeah, don’t take too long. If I keep letting her kill like this, I’m spitting on my matriarch’s

name.

“I screwed up. I never should’ve picked someone like her.”

That same night, Snowball slowly woke up.

The second he opened his eyes, he spotted Annelise sitting by the bed, mixing medicine.

For a second, he thought he was in her room.

Only her bedroom had that mess of herbs and wild plants lying around.

His heart fluttered. But when he turned his head, he spotted the wooden bump that only existed in the third room. His mood tanked.

She’d moved him instead.

A faint sound came from his throat, rough and low.

Annelise turned around in a flash. “Snowball, how are you feeling? Still hurting?”

“I’m feeling a lot better. But I hate that I made you stress out and go through all that.”
