Chapter 120 A Bond Denied

Annelise said there was no need to keep an eye on Clara-Rokky had already been watching her closely. With Clara’s intelligence level, the most she could do was tell the chief that Annelise knew about her failed attempt to bond with Rokky years ago. None of them had expected Riven’s sudden appearance to keep everyone’s attention hanging like this.

Snowball thought for a moment and added, “Annelise, I still think you should be careful of the shaman. That shaman… I don’t think she’s a good person.”

But Annelise didn’t think the shaman was suspicious. To her, she was simply old-fashioned, a temperament that suited her position. After all, why should she trust Annelise-a notorious female who once beat her mates and annoyed the tribe-instead of trusting the chief?

“Alright, I get it. Go back and rest.”

“But Annelise,” Snowball insisted, “if you and Riven are planning something big later, you have to tell me. If things blow up, I can testify for you.”

“It’s actually simple,” Annelise said. “Based on years of patterns, once the chief realizes she can’t bond with Riven, she’ll definitely try something lethal. I just don’t know if that’ll happen tomorrow or in a few days. I want to wait for Riven’s reaction first. Once I hear from him, I’ll tell you.”

Snowball finally relaxed-Annelise wasn’t pushing him away. “It’s a deal then.”

“It’s a deal.”

Even so, something felt off to Annelise. But what? She couldn’t put her finger on it.

Sometimes she wondered: in such a backward tribe, what made the chief so quick to want to kill? Shouldn’t the chief be one of the smarter ones? But then she thought about it again- evolution always produced a few clever individuals. And petty moves like this were simply part of the competition, nothing truly smart about it.

Meanwhile, night fell, and Riven arrived at the chef’s place.

Every tribe’s chief was easy to locate-the house with the most rooms, the thicke strings of stone ornaments hanging outside was always their home.

Riven called out, “Anyone here?”

A gray-skinned mate stepped out first-massive broad-shouldered, narrow-waisted, his muscles full and round. Just one of his upper arms was almost as thick as Riven’s waist.

Chapter 120 A Bond Denied

“So you’re the red-haired male shifter looking for a bonding partner?”

Riven wasn’t intimidated in the slightest. “That’s right.”

“What race are you?”

“Why should I tell you? If your chief is capable, then let her bond with me. If she isn’t…” Riven snorted. “I wouldn’t stay in a dump like this anyway.”

He lifted his hand, and flames rose in his palm.

The gray-skinned mate narrowed his eyes, then turned back inside. “Matriarch, it’s real.”

Only then did the chief step out, greeting him with a pleasant smile. “Come inside. We can

talk.”

The gray-skinned mate gestured for Riven to enter, but what puzzled Riven was that the mate didn’t follow. Inside the chief’s house, there wasn’t a single mate present.

Strange… When an outsider male comes in, shouldn’t the mates protect their matriarch?

Riven still went inside, unaware that strange herbs were burning in every corner of the house. He only sensed something smoldering, hot enough that he kept fanning at the air.

The chief eased his mind. “Don’t worry. The shaman and I have been discussing winter cleansing rituals for driving out sickness, so we burned some wild herbs. They just leave behind a smell.”

Riven didn’t care. “Just try biting my neck. If it doesn’t work, I’ll stay for two days and then leave.”

“You’re in quite a hurry.”

“Everyone admires strength. If you can’t bond with me, it means you’re not strong enough.”

That remark lit a fire in the chief’s chest. Her fis tightened behind her back, but she kept her face perfectly calm. “Fine.”

Riven sat down and lifted his long red hair, exposing the fair nape of his neck.

The chief slowly leaned in, but before she even bit down, a repelling force push her. She had felt that force from many males lately-even the mates she already had begun resisting her recently.

Biting her lip, she hesitated before saying, “Why don’t we try again in two days?
