Right then, Evan came walking up from the bottom of the mountain. The moment he saw Annelise, the tension on his expression eased a little. “Ms. Crawford, I’m so glad you’re okay.” He stepped forward and opened his arms, pulling her into a steady hug. Her head bumped lightly against his chest, which was rising and falling a bit too dramatically.

Annelise felt a wave of relief. He wasn’t the kind of mate who liked to fight, but just having Evan there made her feel safe.

She told him everything that had just happened

Evan said, “Ms. Crawford, I sent Mr. Allen to find Snowball. And did you and Mr. Allen… discuss about anything else?”

“You caught that!” Annelise said. She had expected two possibilities from the start.

Either the chief would simply remove Riven, sticking to the usual routine. Or the chief would take out both Riven and Annelise. Anything Annelise said, as well as her ability to bond with Rokky, was a threat to the chief.

Evan spoke up first. “Sure, there might not be outside savage beasts, but you can’t ignore the ones inside.”

“Inside savage beasts?”

“The Bloodclaw. The one locked up in the back mountain. It even tossed Ms. Crawford down the slope before. Wasn’t that the same savage beast that went after Clara?”

After hearing this, Annelise looked at Evan in a different light.
