Chapter 132 The Helper
So females and males can actually be like this? It’s making me want to go back and try it myself.
She shook her head quickly and said, “Annelise, what do we do now?”
Annelise chuckled. “My brain’s been working nonstop. Haven’t had a break.”

Holly blinked, totally confused. “But you’re always just chilling, except for that ridiculously ugly beast soul you made.”
“Shut up. Who’s ugly? Who said that?”
Don’t she dare call me ugly in front of my Evan.
Out of nowhere, Annelise got back on track, showing that she had fallen off the whole time.
Whether it’s the chief using heat-inducing herbs to mess with Riven or coming up with every excuse to target the strong males, stuff like this really shouldn’t be happening in this tribe. Or maybe it’s just way ahead of its time. However, this chief doesn’t exactly strike me as a genius.
If she were really smart, how would she have turned Clara out the way she did? And with that flute today controlling the snakes, I start thinking there’s someone else behind her. Since they’re already here, I might as well draw that person out, too.
She shared her perspective with everyone.
Evan explained, “Holly, what Ms. Crawford means is there’s only this one way into the mountain. You’ve been blocking it with her, and no one has come out. That tells us whoever’s in there is still inside. This is the perfect chance o catch them.
Annelise snapped her fingers. “Exactly! Oh wow, Evan, you’re like a little worm in my
stomach. You know everything!”
Evan froze. “Worm? Worm’s not great. But if we really have to go with it, then you will be the worm in my stomach. I’ll make sure you get all the nutrients.”
Annelise felt her cheeks heat up instantly. Honestly, growing up in an orphanage had toughened her. She hadn’t blushed over anything in years.
But today, in front of Evan, especially after hearing what he had just said, her heart couldn’t help but race.
“Sure enough, the best ingredients need the simplest cooking. The stuff that makes me blush usually comes from the purest words,” Annelise said.

Evan looked at her blankly. “What?”

“Ah, nothing. I just… okay, let’s drop the whole worm thing. Let’s just stick with the idea that you’ve got me in your heart, and I’ve got you in mine. Fine. I’ve confirmed someone’s hiding inside. Time to go find them,” Annelise said. She paused, replaying everything in her head. Since she wasn’t afraid of snakes, she could head back to the pond.
Annelise figured Evan wasn’t a hunting shifter and didn’t have a good sense of smell, so he couldn’t track the guy inside anyway. He could just hide somewhere safe.
Evan shook his head quickly. “I may not be a hunting shifter, but I can still help. I can mess with him, give you an edge. Trust me, I can do something.”
Annelise wasn’t about to let Evan get dirty. She just said, “I’m already super happy you’re here. You explained it so well, I’m totally satisfied. So go back or hang out at the foot of the mountain until I get down.”
With that, Annelise had Holly keep blocking the path. Whoever came out would have to deal with her as if it were all or nothing.
Holly nodded furiously. She made it clear she understood. After all, if she was about to be killed herself, there was no way she’d let the person who did this get away.
Then Annelise broke into a little jog, heading deeper into the area where the snakes were gathering.
Evan didn’t move. He just shook his head with a quiet, almost resigned sigh. Ugh, I can’t do anything to help Ms. Crawford.
But at the same time, a small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Someone is coming to help her.
Annelise paced back and forth in the woods, lost in thought.
How do I lure that person out? I honestly think their level of intelligence doesn’t fit this tribe at all, or even this shifter world. Could it be…?
Annelise shook her head. Time was tight, so she decided it was better to wait until she could catch them in person and ask.
Right now, not a single snake dared get near her. Even if one or two tried to be bold and strike, they froze the moment her beast soul flashed out.
She tilted her head back and stared up at the trees, reaching straight into the sky. The leaves had mostly fallen, but the snakes coiled around the branches were so many that it almost
