Adrian planted one hand on his hip, hid behind Snowball, and shouted at Riven, “Yeah. Get out!”
Riven swept the long hair at his temples back, revealing that slightly roguish look Adrian had seen only once before. His eyes burned as if lit from within, sharp and alive.
He pointed at Snowball with easy confidence. “You keep calling Annelise your sister. If you’re really her little brother, why don’t you call her mates brother-in-law?”
“I-”
“Hold it.” Riven lifted a hand, stopping Snowball before he could speak.
“When Annelise and I were hiding in the weeds before, you helped us out. I appreciated that. But didn’t you also say then that Annelise doesn like white fur? And you’re white-furred, aren’t you?”
“You! I never said that!”
Snowball tucked one hand behind his back, already thinking about how to drive Riven away.
He had finally behaved himself for a few days, and if he went too far now, Annelise might scold him again.
Still, this guy wasn’t even Annelise’s mate.
And Snowball didn’t want Annelise taking on any more mates, either.
Adrian kept insisting he hadn’t mated, but to Snowball, that was a classic case of not knowing how lucky he was.
Snowball wasn’t even a mate. He didn’t think about that kind of thing at all. All he wanted was to stay with Annelise forever.
Before Snowball could respond, Riven spoke again. “Whether you said it or not, you know the truth yourself. Someone here doesn’t just want to be the little brother. He can only ever be the little brother.”
“You-”
Snowball felt his breath catch in his throat, stuck halfway between a shout and silence.
When Annelise came out with Evan and Rokky, that was exactly what they heard.

Annelise paused. Riven was tearing into Snowball.
That was new.

Evan was about to step in, but Annelise tugged his sleeve, signaling him to stay put and watch from the doorway.
Snowball pointed straight at Riven. “So what if Im the little brother? Brothers-in-law can be replaced. A little brother can’t. Annelise can choose not to bond with any mates, but she’ll always acknowledge me as her brother. It’s not like she’s never broken a bond before. I asked her myself. She even dissolved her bond with Evan once. None of you are guaranteed.”
Those words put Snowball squarely against every mate in the room.
Evan glanced back at Annelise after hearing that His eyes blinked once.
Leaning close to her ear, he asked in a low voice, “Is that how you see it? Mates can be replaced, but a brother can’t?”
“Uh…”
Annelise shrank back slightly.
Evan’s presence was hot, and his voice was low and steady. It stirred a sudden, unwanted thought-how long had it been since the two of them were together?
But Riven’s counterattack cut that short.
He walked straight up to Snowball. Standing side by side, Snowball was a full head shorter.
“Mate or not,” Riven said calmly, “at least your sister and I have slept together. You and your sister never will. Not in this lifetime.”
He even reached out and ruffled Snowball’s silver hair, clearly enjoying the softness-so different from the feathers of avian shifters.
“Have you even seen other females? You’re still a kid. Every one of Annelise’s mates has either bonded with her or mated with her. What about you? You’ve got neither. You can’t even stay the night. You have to go home and find your mother. So no matter how you spin it, we’re not the same. Got it… little brother?”
He put heavy emphasis on the last two words.
Furious, Snowball slapped Riven’s hand away.
Amber light flared in his eyes-the cold, focused look of a predator on the hunt. He couldn’t help snapping back, “At the end of the day, you’re nothing but a wild pheasant.”

“Brimel may be a bird too,” Riven replied coolly, “but it’s bigger than you’ll ever be. Next time you’re napping in the fields, keep your eyes open. Otherwise, if I don’t like the look of you, I might just snatch you up and drop you to your death.”
That nearly made Snowball explode with rage.
Off to the side, Adrian suddenly didn’t know whose side to take.
Backing Snowball made sense-after all, Snowball had been fighting Riven for him.
But backing Riven also made sense.
