Evan turned around and pulled Annelise into his arms, settling her on his lap.

“Ms. Crawford,” he asked quietly, “when did you start liking me?”

Annelise rested her chin on Evan’s shoulder. She thought for a moment before answering, “At first, I just noticed you. I thought you were incredibly stubborn. Then, while treating you, I realized you were someone who cared deeply about right and wrong. But the moment I truly fell for you was at Holly’s house, when you insisted on telling me the truth no matter what. That said, Evan… why are you suddenly asking this?”

Evan chuckled softly and brushed a kiss against the corner of her lips. “I was just thinking— it’s a funny coincidence.”

“A coincidence?” she echoed.

“Yes,” Evan said in a low voice. “Because the moment I started liking you was when you appeared out of nowhere and punched a hole straight through Holly’s roof.”

“Oh,” Annelise said, surprised. “Then it really was around the same time. We weren’t far off at all.”

Evan nodded.

Annelise felt it then-that quiet sense that they truly understood each other without needing words.

At such close range, her heart began to itch in a way that made her restless. It had been a long time since she and Evan had been intimate like this.

For reasons she couldn’t explain, once she relaxed, breathing in the faint orchid scent clinging to him, a deep calm settled in her chest

Almost without thinking, she leaned in to kiss him.

Evan leaned back slightly.

“Ms. Crawford,” he said, steady but careful, “this isn’t my heat cycle. Even if we mate, it would be very difficult to conceive.”

Normally, Evan’s rational tone suited him perfectly. Right now, though, it completely ruined the mood.

“Well,” Annelise said, clearly annoyed, “it doesn’t have to be about having children. Are you saying that without children, there’s no love between us? Isn’t it because we love each other

first that children are born from that love?”

Hearing this, even Evan-always calm and restrained-felt a spark of excitement. A faint blush spread across his handsome face. The arm around Annelise’s waist tightened.

“Ms. Crawford,” he said softly, “this is the first time I’ve heard something like that.”

“And how does it feel?” she asked with a smile.

Evan was quiet for a moment.

“It feels… good,” he admitted. “My heart is beating very fast.”

Annelise laughed.

She was already in his arms; now their bodies were pressed even closer. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him directly. Then she exhaled softly against his neck.

At first, Annelise took the lead.

Later, Evan shifted positions, laying her back onto the bed. He braced himself beside her face with one arm.

Smiling, Annelise cupped Evan’s face and slowly traced his features with her fingers. Then she hooked her foot around the bed curtains and pulled them all the way closed.

The first time was awkward. The second felt better. By the third and fourth, they moved together as if they’d always known the rhythm.

When sunlight streamed into the room the next morning, Annelise slowly opened her eyes.

This time, she felt no soreness, no aching exhaustion.

That was probably because Evan hadn’t been in heat-and because he was never an impulsive man to begin with.

In short, she felt refreshed and clear-headed.

She rubbed her eyes and looked at Evan sleeping beside her.

At the same moment, Evan opened his eyes too

There were several faint kiss marks on his neck and scratch marks along his arms.

Annelise’s face instantly warmed.

It seemed things had been rather intense once emotions ran high.

She pulled the blanket up over her face.

Evan asked gently, “Ms. Crawford, are you feeling unwell?”

“If I really were unwell.” she replied, muffled under the blanket, “hiding like this wouldn’t be enough.

Evan hadn’t expected offspring at all. Still, by tradition, after mating, a mate was supposed to check the matriarch’s abdomen.

When he looked-his hand trembled.

“A red mark?”

Annelise gasped. “A daughter!”

Evan swore to the heavens that he had never once imagined having a child. Anyone would’ve thought the same. He hadn’t been in heat-how could there possibly be offspring?

And yet, not only was there a child, but it was also a female.

That meant she had inherited Annelise’s shifter bloodline.

Evan had helped his mother deliver countless younger siblings while growing up. He knew that mark all too well. There was no mistake.

Annelise patted Evan on the shoulder, delighted “See? This is a child who came because she knew her parents loved each other.”
