Adrian pouted, yanked his hand back, and fidgeted with both hands while glancing left and right. His rabbit ears gave a twitch.

He said, “Because in seven days, your little baby will be born, and then, maybe just a day or two after, I can finally copulate with you! Who knows, if we time it right, I might have my own little one by spring. I don’t favor girls over boys-I’d be happy with baby bunnies too.”

His voice still had that awkward, scratchy tone-deep and nasally, like a pubescent boy. Just awful.

Annelise shot him a look. “Keep dreaming.”

She thought to herself, she wouldn’t let anyone force her into anything.

She needed time. She needed that feeling-like she was falling in love, heart pounding, breath catching.

She needed to want it.

She refused to do it just for the sake of reproduction.

Adrian gave a small sigh, then asked timidly, “Ms. Crawford, do you really not think I look awful like this? Would you still want me? I mean… I’m not a real bunny anymore.”

Annelise reached out and gave the soft flesh around his waist a playful pinch. Adrian slapped her hand away immediately.

Same little reaction as when she’d first tried to pet his ears.

He muttered, “I’m already like this, and you’re still messing with me?”

Annelise laughed. “What do you mean, ‘like this’? You’re still you. That’s enough. You’re still chubby and squishy and soft. You’re still Adrian, and that’s what matters. You said it yourself- shifters are shifters. If you were always turning back into a wild animal, what would make you any different from a beast?”

Adrian blinked. Something clicked.

He mumbled to himself, “I’m still me. Yeah. I’ve always been me. I’ve always been this way.”

He looked down at his hands. In this form, they hadn’t changed. He wasn’t some giant who could crush a house with a single step.

His habits, the way he moved, the way he acted-none of that had changed.

The only one who really thought he’d changed… was himself.

Adrian pulled Annelise into his arms, and the fluffy rabbit tail behind him started wagging like a helicopter blade.

“Ms. Crawford, I love you so much. Becoming your mate is the best thing ever!”

“Heh. If you could actually finish building the house, that’d be even better. Oh, and remember, you need to start eating meat.”

Oddly enough, after that conversation, Adrian seemed to get a sudden burst of energy. He spent the entire night cleaning up the mess.

Hudson helped, wrapping its tail around scraps of wood and dragging them off load by load.

Adrian, meanwhile, was lifting entire beams by himself like it was nothing.

The only thing he hadn’t gotten used to was eating meat. He still mostly stuck to wild greens and dried vegetables.

But that wasn’t something he could force-both his body and his mind needed time to adjust.

Seven more days passed.

Annelise’s baby, now fully developed, had formed a small bulge beneath her skin. Evan made a small incision and gently brought the baby out.

This time, she didn’t have to push it out herself. Evan used the shifter world’s traditional method.

Surprisingly, it left a much smaller wound than when she did it on her own.

Back then, she’d just tear a bit of skin-it’d heal in a day.

This time, it took maybe an hour. No pain, not even when her clothes brushed over it.

As Evan put it, “A precious female shouldn’t suffer through childbirth.”

He cradled his tiny egg lovingly.

Hudson came over, proudly holding his own egg-already grown to the size of a goose egg- and pressed it against Evan’s.

Evan smiled on the outside, but inside, there was no trace of joy at becoming a father.

Only anxiety.

His daughter would inherit her mother’s beast form. How could an ornamental shifter like him possibly protect her?

That day, Mr. Allen finally paid them a rare visit.

The first thing he saw when he arrived was the half-finished roof and open-air structure. He couldn’t help but sigh.

“I was only gone a few days, and now the second and third houses don’t even have roofs?”

Annelise didn’t want to relive the chaos. She just said, “If you’d come a few days earlier, there wouldn’t even be a house. We had to rebuild. Anyway, what are you doing here?”

Mr. Allen flicked her forehead with his lion tail. “My granddaughter was just born. Of course, I had to come see her. You’re amazing. You’ve had two babies in such a short time. Most people need a year or more for just one.”

Annelise swatted his tail away.

He added, “You’d better get this house finished soon. I’m moving in.”
